Fresh install hangs on boot

I just bought a new Dell G15, installed Manjaro Gnome from the latest iso using the entire disk, deleteing all particions.

The installaion went throught, but on restarting the system hangs on the Dell logo for minutes. If I switch it off, a manjaro logo comes up below the Dell logo for a second.

I reinstalled Manjaro just in case, but it is the same.

Hi @rrd, and welcome!

Have you made sure secure boot is disabled?

yes, it is disabled

If you’re sure, then there’s only one other thing I can suggest to check.

Make sure whether the system is using UEFI or Legacy (BIOS) mode and is installed accordingly. Other than that, I have no idea what’s going on.

I don’t know if this’ll work or make a difference, but you COULD boot with the Live ISO, enter a chroot environment and updating the system, providing any errors you get.

That may work, and it also might not. But it is all I can think of. Oh, that, and if there’s no danger of losing anything, just reinstalling it.

  1. do you have efi boot files?
  2. you have nvdia video card do you have nonfree driver install ?

I found when i use the newest ISO to install .I haven’t the grub tmenu o display. it has long black screen an direct goes into gnome desktop . then I make the grub config to display in graphical terminal then it goes right.

@Mirdarthos

My system has only UEFI BIOS, Legacy is not supported.
I can log in from a live usb, but I do not know how to chroot.

@bluerain
I have EFI/Manjaro/grubx64.efi and EFI/boot/bootx64.efi

I have an nvidia card, and I tried installing with proprieraty drives and than with free drivers, the result is the same.

AFAIK, BIOS is legacy.

To perform the update VIA chroot from the Live environment:

  1. Boot into the Live environment.
  2. Open a terminal
  3. Run the following command:
manjaro-chroot -a
  1. You should now, theoretically, be using your installation. But be careful: you are now root on your system.
  2. From the chroot environment, tun the following to check for any updates, and install them if there are.
pamac checkupdates && pamac upgrade

The checkupdates might be unnecesary. I keep it in to make sure the package databases are in sync.

  1. Type exit to exit the chroot environment, close the terminal and reboot.

If there are any errors, post them from the live session. That way you can copy and paste as required. If there are none, that’s good.

The other option is just reinstalling everything from scratch and make sure everything selected is correct.

manjaro-chroot -a                                                ✔
grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sda1. Check your device.map.
grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sda1. Check your device.map.
==> Mounting (ManjaroLinux) [/dev/nvme0n1p1]
 --> mount: [/mnt]
 --> mount: [/mnt/boot/efi]
pamac checkupdates && pamac upgrade
Your system is up-to-date.

I think, at least this error, is caused by some kind of DNS problem.

Please post the output of,

ping -c 4 8.8.8.8

as well as

dig +short google.com

and

dig +trace google.com

Ping seems to be ok.

Hm. It seems the dns problem solved, I managed to run the update.

I removed the quite flag from the grub menu.

After update and reboot, I see no error messages, no dell logo, just black blank screen with a blinking cursor at the top.

OK, now I’m completely stumped, then.

I don’t know anything further, sorry.

:sob:

Thank you. I am pretty sure that I am missing something simple.

You’re welcome. Wouldn’t surprise me either. It usually turns out that way.

Can you rule out the vmd module and other steps that are afflicting modern systems?

I provided step by step instructions in here:

If you need help applying them, let me know. Make sure to apply all three modifications.

(You likely only have "/" and "/boot/efi" partitions, so skip the line about mounting "/boot" and just do "/" and "/boot/efi" before continuing to the “manjaro-chroot /mnt” part. Though it seems 'manjaro-chroot -a" works fine for you, so you can just use that again.)

While still in the chroot environment, can you double-check and post the outputs of,

cat /etc/default/grub
cat /etc/mkinitcpio.conf

Looks like you’re using a WD NVMe.

Once ruled out, there’s another idea you can try.

cat /etc/default/grub

GRUB_TIMEOUT=5
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="Manjaro"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet nvme_load=YES splash apparmor=1 security=apparmor udev.log_priority=3"

# line, and set GRUB_DEFAULT to saved.

cat /etc/mkinitcpio.conf

# MODULES
# The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
# run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
# in this array. For instance:
#     MODULES=(piix ide_disk reiserfs)
MODULES=(vmd)

# BINARIES
# This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may
# wish into the CPIO image. This is run last, so it may be used to
# override the actual binaries included by a given hook
# BINARIES are dependency parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
BINARIES=()

# FILES
# This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
# as-is and are not parsed in any way. This is useful for config files.
FILES=""

# HOOKS
# This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
# modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
# Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
# order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for
# help on a given hook.
# 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
# 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
# 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
# Examples:
## This setup specifies all wmodules in the MODULES setting above.
## No raid, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.
#    HOOKS=(base)
#
## This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
## work as a sane default
# HOOKS=(base udev autodetect block filesystems)
#
## This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
##   No autodetection is done.
#    HOOKS=(base udev block filesystems)
#
## This setup assembles a pata mdadm array with an encrypted root FS.
## Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H mdadm' for more information on raid devices.
# HOOKS=(base udev block mdadm encrypt filesystems)
#
## This setup loads an lvm2 volume group on a usb device.
#    HOOKS=(base udev block lvm2 filesystems)
#
## NOTE: If you have /usr on a separate partition, you MUST include the
# usr, fsck and shutdown hooks.
HOOKS="base udev block autodetect modconf keyboard keymap plymouth filesystems fsck"

# COMPRESSION
# Use this to compress the initramfs image. By default, gzip compression
# is used. Use 'cat' to create an uncompressed image.

Alright, looks good. Can you reboot, and when it gets “stuck” for about a minute, see if you are able to switch to another TTY like this:
CTRL + ALT + F3

If so, you don’t have to do anything just yet, wanting to rule something else out. (You can login with your username/password, and run sudo systemctl reboot.) Not sure if you’re on another PC to use this forum. If so, you can leave it at the TTY screen without rebooting.)

edit /etc/default/grub , to chang grub in graphical mode

# Uncomment to disable graphical terminal
#GRUB_TERMINAL_OUTPUT=console
GRUB_TERMINAL_OUTPUT=gfxterm
GRUB_GFXMODE=auto // chang to your resolusion,or use auto

save it ,and `update-grub’

edit /etc/mkinitcpio.conf, add nouveau module to load video card
MODULES=“nouveau …” //if you want use intel card here to use i915
save it. then do mkinitcpio -p linux513 //linux513 is 1 preset, which can find in /etc/mkinitcpio.d/
maybe this can resolve it.
