Frequent system freezes

Hi…I have installed manjaro kde on dualboot with windows 10…after the installation there are frequent system freezes and i cannot do anything other than hard reset…I have a Nvidia GeForce 940 Mx display card and i have an intel i7 dualcore processor…I am willing to share more information if you guide me…Any help will be greatly appreciated…Please help…

Could be related to your nvidia driver. What driver did you install and did you check if your card is supported?

Edit: there are multiple posts in this forum describing troubleshooting nvidia issues and how to post system infos. That may help

Hi zircon34.I installed form usb flashdrive with proprietary drivers…I have video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime drivers. Here is my mhwd -li output:

Installed PCI configs:

              NAME VERSION FREEDRIVER TYPE

video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime 2020.11.30 false PCI
video-modesetting 2020.01.13 true PCI

Please read this to provide system information:

This will help you in the long run for troubleshooting and asking for help.

Try this:

inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width

In terminal to give basic system info.

I looked up for network card and see a whole thread where you were helped to post basic info.

Edit: looks like this hardware is causing you trouble with manjaro.

Im sorry. Here is my inxi outout:

Yes.On Manjaro gnome i had many troubles.Thats why i reinstalled manjaro kde this time…

Please post your code within

I checked online,

https://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/104284/

Your graphics card
Device-2: NVIDIA GM108M [GeForce 940MX] vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: nvidia v: 460.56

does not seem to support the 460 driver. A quick search reveals driver 367.27.

Edit: further below we found that is not correct… sorry for that again

Someone else may be better at helping you with this as I run newer nvidia hardware.

For sure. But mostly if you use wayland session as opposed to xorg, wayland does not support well nvidia cards yet…

The next step would be to check whether the older nvidia driver 390x or something provided with manjaro supports your card.

What do you advise me to do?What code?Should i remove nvidia-hybrid-prime drivers?

im on x11 not wayland…I am running kde now not gnome…

That is good, just thought I mention it as I had troubles with gnome while distro hopping and didnt realize that the system freeze were likely due to me using wayland

So.What should i do?

Unfortunately troubleshooting nvidia card drivers is not a one post solution. It can potentially make your system not booting to your desktop etc.

I recommend you try using the nouveau free driver if that is an ok solution for you. Manjaro has a system setting to change or check which graphics drivers are installable via GUI.

I gather that you may not have experience troubleshooting nvidia drivers. My experience is limited to my own system. I just hope that someone can pick up from here as we are already a step further in troubleshooting this problem.

→ your nvidia driver may not be supported by your nvidia card.

Edits: we just found that is not correct… sorry for that.

As I mentioned in my post above, I suggest you search whether your driver is supported in 390x, which is the legacy driver via AUR. I think manjaro only provides the newer driver 460 via official arch repo.

There is also some info on the arch wiki.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA

Perhaps that may help as manjaro has its own automated system to recognize needed drivers and install free or non free drivers.

https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php/Configure_Graphics_Cards

Zircon i appreciate your help but are you sure that my nvidia-hybrid-prime drivers are not supported by my nvidia card?

You can check which drivers are supported for your specific card. Choose linux for your OS.

https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

I have seen workarounds for older drivers to install nvidia 390x via AUR, not sure whether you can do it on manjaro using the hardware utility tool/command. I would hate to see your system booting into black screen trying to modify your driver. That is why I recommend so much reading so you understand the fundamental problem. Make sure also to backup all your data before fiddling with the graphics drivers. In case you want to reinstall your system (not ideal).

Well.I checked the link.It says it has 460.67 drivers while i have 460.56…maybe if i remove 460.56 and install 460.67 solves the problem.i love reading but regardless of how much i read i cannot spot the problem…Thank you for your help…

Sorry was on my phone, it did not show the right driver.

I also see it supports 460 and 465. You should be ok. Well that excludes the dvidia driver as problem then.

Next step would be to see what program/process makes your screen freeze. Next time it freezes, after reboot pull to log journal file, you can use the following command described here (from manjaro wiki):
