Freezing while audio continues to play

The audio will continue to play and the mouse and keyboard becomes completely unresponsive. Sometimes the cursor turns into a loading wheel and I can move it around. After I downgraded my kernel and made a swapfile to try to fix it it seems to have been occuring less, it usually occurs 1-2 hours after booting. I’m new to Linux and manjaro was installed a few days ago.

What should I do?

Hello and welcome @Maximus

That could be of course an issue of heavy memory usage of some sort of application. So adding a swap is the correct move what everyone would have recommended.

If this is really every time 1-2 hours after boot, then I fear it could be 2 reasons:

  1. A running application has a memory leak or need a lot or RAM. Can’t say anythin here, since I have no idea what you are running.
  2. Your RAM Module is defect. You will need to check it. On a running system you can check ram with memtester:
sudo memtester <MEMORY> ITERATIONS

sudo memtester 1024 1

That tests 1024MB of the RAM one time. And note: This memory will be locked, and can not be used by the kernel at the test time. So don’t allocate to much memory for the stress-test.

What could be also an issue is that the open source driver nouveau does not clock up in general because of non-existing function. It stays all the time at the base clock. Installing the nvidia driver could speed it up…

sudo mhwd --auto pci nonfree 0300

After a reboot the driver should be available.

Yeah I would say it is the video driver.

I suggest you update BIOS - H81M-E - Support | Asus Global
A lot of the later BIOS versions mention “Improve system stability”

Ho! yeah it’s pretty outdated  It never hurts (unless you have an issue during the BIOS flash) to update your BIOS when you missed five years worth of BIOS updates  (just be ready to restore GRUB with a live USB, everyone I know, as well as many people on the forum, have to do that after updating the BIOS or else Manjaro shows as ‘UEFI OS’ in the boot options, and doesn’t boot at all).
