Freeze on sleep

Every time I put my Laptop to sleep it freezes instantly, only the Networks Symbol in the taskbar changes to the Disconnected Symbol. The only way from there (as far as is know) is to shut down the system and restart it with the power button.

I have installed Manjaro one or two Weeks ago as Dual Boot on a HP Probook 455 G8 besides Win11 using this Guide.

I started using KDE Plasma X11 as DE and switched to Wayland after a friend of mine suggested it to fix my problem. It work for a day and now it keeps freezing again on sleep.

My system doesn’t have deep sleep:

cat /sys/power/mem_sleep

I enjoy using Manjaro, but without a functional Sleep every distro would be a pain.

Hopefully I provided everything relevant to this issue (it’s my first post). If some information is missing I will be happy to provide it.
Thanks for the help in advance.

Hello and welcome,

Sadly, you have now gained an introduction to the wild world of random guides found online.
They are of extremely varying quality.
In this case … we have a few problems.

  • Rufus. Maybe its better now, but the dev was actively hostile to manjaro, ensuring for a long while that ISOs written using rufus would be broken. Even if it technically worked now I would never trust it.
  • Manual partitioning. For some reason it guides you to do this … and then does not give explanations for personal configurations. Instead it just dictates a handful of manual steps … and they arent very good.
    • A 2gb SWAP? Thats near useless.
    • A separate ESP? There may be some cases where this is desirable, but its generally more desirable to share the existing ESP.
( For example - usually Grub would not provide other OSs to boot into if the ESP is not shared. )

Now for your situation … maybe none of that is related.
But lets get some system info

inxi -Farz

Try to disable fast boot in windows and try again. One way to try this fast is to disconnect the laptop from the mains and then remove the battery for a couple of minutes. Then boot directly Manjaro (without booting windows). If sleep works as expected then Windows is messing with your BIOS state.

Disable Fast Startup in Windows (hibernation variant).

I did turn off fast Startup with powercfg /h off in the terminal, because it is quite hard to get my laptop open and im not even sure if the battery is removable. Sadly didn’t work.

Oh. The guide seemed quite detailed and not harmful. Any tips on finding better guides?

Thats unsual.
Was this the product of intentionally augmenting the output? Or is there something wrong with your locale settings in general?

( Possible remedy - open Manjaro Settings Manager and apply locale settings )

If my search-foo is correct then you have available BIOS updates.
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/hp-probook-455-g8-notebook-pc/38228735

Be warned that 6.11 kernel is EOL and should be replaced by 6.12.
Note: Its generally considered a good idea to keep at least one known working LTS kernel, like 6.6, installed.

Also. You may notice that kernel 6.6 does not exhibit the same behavior. If so then it could be related to PSR (Panel Self Refresh) a power saving feature that got new implementation beginning with kernel 6.11.

As mentioned above this SWAP is paltry.
You have 16gb of memory, so you may not run out easily, but when you do, then that 2gb isnt going to cover very much.
I might suggest reworking this setup for something larger. You may also consider using a swapfile or zram in place of a regular partition if reworking the partitions is a headache.

zram is also generally noticeably more performant, though it negates hibernation ability. But I might assume thats not a concern as the current system setup could not possibly hibernate due to the near nonexistence of SWAP.

If you are dual-booting then also make sure to verify the disablement of ‘Fast Start’/Hibernation in windoze (this ‘feature’ is intentionally misleading … This setting in fact ensures that windoze hibernates instead of shutting down. You gain faster startup by never shutting down), as mentioned by the other posters. It is a common pitfall that can have various negative consequences if left enabled.

I think you would have gotten a better end result from just doing the automated install, let alone different choices from manual.
For guidance your first stops should be the forums or the wikis.

https://wiki.manjaro.org
https://wiki.archlinux.org

Aside from that its hard to give a good rule for which guides are OK.
I might say to just generally stay away from ones that arent recognizably vetted and/or that you cant fully understand yourself. Its never a good idea to run things you cant at least interpret.
Maybe we can say that youtube has the dubious honor of being considered an almost overwhelmingly bad source of information? Of course there are still exceptions to (almost) every rule.

A post was split to a new topic: Freeze on waking up from sleep

I didn’t change anything, since the startup configuration. I reconfigured the local settings. Now everything is en_US, but thats ok for now and the error is gone.

I installed all driver updates from the hp-support and tested the kernels 515, 66, 611, 612. Doesn’t change anything with the freezing.

I have no problem reinstalling the distro completely as dual boot. Wouldn’t that be the easiest way?

I don’t have the two options hilighted in the image below on windows. I also tried turning fast start off with powercfg /h off , but didn’t get any response. Turning fast boot off in the BIOS settings didn’t help either.

When I got my HP laptop, I then found out that if I chose Windows operating (the newest option available) in the support page, I got more BIOS updates than by choosing Linux operating system. So I always installed BIOS updates from the Windows 11 64bit support page.

(just making notice)

For the sake of clarification: Fast Boot and Fast Startup are not the same thing.

Fast Boot (BIOS option)

Fast Boot is a BIOS option which (if present, and enabled) allows certain self-tests to be skipped during pre-boot (before handoff to a bootloader). Fast Boot settings may exist in varying locations, or not exist at all; as every BIOS has differing capabilities.

Misinformation in Internet search results may lead to a belief that Fast Boot (the BIOS option) and Fast Startup (hibernation) are the same; they are not:

It is generally recommended (but not compulsory) to disable Fast Boot when using Linux either standalone or in a multiboot scenario.

Fast Startup (Windows)

Fast Startup is a hibernation variant which might be enabled by default on some Windows computers.

With Fast Startup enabled, Windows does not actually shut down; instead, it sleeps. When the computer subsequently wakes from the hibernation state, this gives the illusion of a faster startup and shutdown experience.

When multibooting, this can cause havoc with boot processes, and NTFS mounting functionality, in Linux. To better understand these issues, and their consequences, please see the related article [Primer] NTFS on Linux.

Fast Startup must be disabled in a multiboot scenario. :eyes:

There are many documented ways to turn off fast startup in both Windows 10 and 11, however, the easiest is to use the following command – from an administrative command prompt – this will disable all hibernation (other sleep states will not be affected):

powercfg /h off

Thanks for all the help. Disabling Windows’s Fast Startup couldn’t help me, so I reinstalled Manjaro and now and can sleep.

Are we to assume you didn’t already have it disabled?
