Handbrake encode using Matroska/H.265 MKV 1080p30 preset causes computer to shutdown

My attempts to encode a MKV created with MakeMKV (bluray rip) is for some reason causing my computer to crash/shutdown. If I use an option that uses H.264 instead, I it works fine. For whatever reason, I could see no messages related to a panic when I checked journalctl. Not sure if I need to enable something so those get captured.

I am using Handbrake installed from the official repo binary - 1.3.3-4, 5.9 kernel, latest updates installed. I have already tried the obvious uninstall/reinstall of Handbrake with no change in symptoms.

Also - what’s the deal with getting a “No links” error posting this because it says “X[.]Org” in my inxi -Fazy output?

I had the same problem and I coudn’t find any fix. So I started to use ffmpeg instead, it’s a litle more dificulte but use less resources and it’s faster

Thanks for the suggestion. Just realized that even using one of the Matroska H.264 presets will cause the crash/shutdown. Looking like it’ll work fine if I just use one of the General presets like HQ 1080p30 surround (H.264). Just seems odd that I can get this to work fine if I boot to Win 10. Must be a bug I guess.

Did you try to make your own present? maybe it’s a but in the preset itself

It isn’t the preset. It happens ever time I try to encode using H265 or qsv (H264 or H265). I posted about it on the Handbrake forum. They had me install Handbrake via flatpak and try again. Got a little farther this time, but it still crashed/shutdown like before. If I had more space on my boot ssd I’d try installing another distro to see if I could reproduce the issue. When my new 1 tb ssd gets to me on Monday, I’ll try some new things.
