Font-manager shows up twice in pamac

Strange thing: I am on Manjaro Stable/Cinnamon(X11)/German and font-manager shows up twice in pamac and in Cinnamon menu.

  1. Font Manager (font-manager) > which starts font-manager
  2. Schriften-Betrachter (font-manager) > which starts font-viewer

They are also linked when un/installed.

In Cinnamon menu it makes sence to have links for two different programs, but not in pamac, when they are out of the same package right? At least, that’s the only example I know of.

In the graphical package manager (pamac-manager if called from terminal)
there are indeed two almost identical things.

One is called:
Font Manager (font-manager)
the other is
Font Viewer (font-manager)

Both are in the “extra” repo according to what the GUI manager tells you.

I don’t know whether one can have both of them installed at the same time.

It certainly looks strange.

I have neither one installed.

Quite usual … Search for calibre, you will get 4 packages which are in fact the same one (see the version or the size on the right) containing 4 different but related programs. And there are plenty of such ! (LibreOffice for 7)

I normally never use pamac or pamac-manager.
I just saw this when I tried in my Cinnamon VM.
I had to boot it up because I removed pamac completely from my other (Xfce4) VM.
I don’t run Manjaro on real hardware - just in a few VM’s to be able to follow on some questions and help others.

It’s the same program, notice the package name is the same: font-manager. There are two Appstream files, that’s what programs like Add/Remove Software (Pamac) read to display the data:

/usr/share/metainfo/com.github.FontManager.FontManager.metainfo.xml
/usr/share/metainfo/com.github.FontManager.FontViewer.metainfo.xml

Having said that, I’m not sure why developers provide different Appstream files like that. :man_shrugging:

Aha! Thanks for the information.
Investigating the metainfo directory, in my case there are only 122 entries. So not every program uses it right now.

Where does pamac gets it’s information, when there is no entry in metainfo?
Just from the Manjaro repos?

Btw, FontManager has two entries, because of historical reasons. They are aware of:

From archlinux-appstream-data.
