Hi everyone, I’ve been having two issues since the last update. Downloads are simply overwritten when I download something again. There’s also no prompt asking whether to overwrite the file or not. I’ve already created a new profile and deleted the old one. This is happening on the Cinnamon version of Manjaro. Also, GTK4 apps are in light mode instead of dark mode.

To make sure we understand this, try MOVING your ‘downloads from firefox’… where are they downloaded?
ASSUMING that it’s ~/Downloads then create ~/Downloads/Firefox` and drag them all in there.
Then download again.
Why would you want to ‘download something again’?
Hi, I’m downloading ZIP files for a database where the filenames are the same but the contents are different (because I need to generate CRC hash values for them). Normally, a window pops up asking if Firefox should replace the file or if I want to rename it. That window/prompt no longer appears.
I never know whether I need to rename the file because it already exists or not. It looks like it’s downloading normally, but it isn’t…
But this doesn’t just apply to ZIP files—it applies to everything. I just happened to notice it with the ZIP files.
You can tell firefox to ask you where to save files instead of just blindly saving them. This should then open up a portal window where you can choose where to save the file, and show the names of already saved files in that particular directory.
I wonder if it could be something portal related. There were some changes to the portal packages recently. So it won’t hurt to check what portal packages you have installed. Cinnamon was a gnome fork once, so i suppose the right one should be xdg-desktop-portal-gnome but i am not sure. Alternatively it will be the gtk one.
On the theming issue, did you try the usual tricks? Like symlinking the gtk dir, editing settings.ini, etc?

It’s probably xdg-desktop-portal-xapp, which has Cinnamon support.
I’ve done some more testing. The file is downloaded and overwritten, but no message appears…

But have you looked at the settings in firefox’s Preferences?
Yes, in Firefox, the settings for each file are set to “Ask every time” and “Ask whether to open or save files.”
Are you using some kind of add-on download manager, perchance?
No, I don’t have a download manager installed. I tried it with a fresh Firefox profile. It behaves the same way there, too.

If the dark mode part is solved, I would test the download issue separately from portals. The file-type option ‘Ask every time’ only decides open/save; the overwrite prompt normally comes from the save dialog. Try enabling ‘Always ask you where to save files’ in Firefox, then test one duplicate download. If that works, it points to the direct download path. If it still silently overwrites, a quick comparison is launching Firefox once with GTK_USE_PORTAL=0 firefox from a terminal and checking whether the normal GTK file chooser asks about the existing name.
Hi, unfortunately GTK_USE_PORTAL=0 firefox that didn’t help—or rather, it didn’t make any difference. I’ve set Firefox to ask me whether I want to “open or save” a file. When I choose “Save,” it’s supposed to ask me “where to save it.” Everything works as usual. It no longer asks if a file should be overwritten; it just does it.

Here’s how it currently seems to work in Firefox. Whether it’s the intended design or not, I do not know:
It matters how the file gets downloaded. If “Always ask you where to save files” is unchecked and you try to access a file that Firefox can’t handle natively (e.g.
.exe,.zip, etc. files or files sent with anapplication/octet-streamMIME type or similar), then Firefox will download it without any additional prompts/dialogs. This is the scenario where files will be automatically renamed.If you trigger a download by choosing something like “Save As…”, you will get a dialog box prompting you for a filename, and whatever filename is in that dialog box is what will get used. No automatic renaming will happen in that case.
For images specifically, you can use the Download Image from Context Menu – Get this Extension for 🦊 Firefox (en-US) add-on. Note that you would need to use the added “Download Image” context menu item and not the old “Save Image As…” item.
Thanks, but this is more about automatically renaming the files. It would be nice if there were a setting for that. I’d be happy if Firefox just behaved as usual
