Fatal error in Manjaro at encoding FS

A fatal bug was detected in displaying the Cyrillic in the File System.
When accessing Manjaro externally using MC over the Shell protocol, directory and file names are garbled and cannot be accessed.
This bug does not allow me to copy files to or from Manjaro from another computer.

How to fix it?

Welcome to Manjaro! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

  1. Please read the information behind this link. It will help you to post necessary information.
  1. Please press the three dots below your post and then press the :pencil2:
  • If you give us information about your system, we can see what we’re talking about and make better suggestions.
  • You can do this by using inxi in a terminal or in console.
sudo inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width
  • Personally identifiable information such as serial numbers and MAC addresses are filtered out by this command
  • Presenting the information in this way allows everyone to be familiar with the format and quickly find the items they need without missing anything.
  1. Copy the output from inxi (including the command) and paste it into your post.
  • To make it more readable, add 3 backticks ``` on an extra line before and after the pasted text.

Have you already :mag: for your problem in the forum ? (Wisdom lies in asking → listening → reading :wink: )

Ok, thank you, I added inxi.

As well added as the results of running the neofetch utility:

andreas85,
I have fulfilled your requirements according to the rules of publication.
But unfortunately, no one has reported a solution to this fatal problem :sleepy:

you mean over ssh :wink: ?

So let’s see if we can find the reason for this behavior.
What do you see, if you do a

ssh user@192.168.1.30 ls -lA /home/user

This is not a bug, but a misconfiguration of the character encoding on one of the two systems.

  • What character encoding is used on your manjaro arm computer ? (maybe UTF-8)
  • What character encoding is used on your other Computer ? (windows … ?)

Once you know the real problem, you can change the title to clearly represent your problem.

Maybe something like: How can I access files on a Linux file system from my Windows 95 machine? (or similar)
This can also be helpful when searching for similar topics with Google or here in the forum

Yes, via ssh.
Ok, this command:

But I don’t use Windows :slightly_smiling_face: I use Debian.
And if I connect via MC via ssh to another Debian, then this all the symbols are displayed correctly.
But if I connect to Manjaro, then Cyrillic characters are distorted.

So, is it specific to MidnightCommander and not to any other program that can be used via SSH? Which locale settings are you using remote and local (locale)?

Please, here are my locale settings in Debian:

user@desktop:~$ locale
LANG=ru_RU.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=ru_RU:ru
LC_CTYPE="ru_RU.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="ru_RU.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="ru_RU.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="ru_RU.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="ru_RU.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="ru_RU.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="ru_RU.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="ru_RU.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="ru_RU.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="ru_RU.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="ru_RU.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="ru_RU.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=

And here are my locale settings in Manjaro ARM:

[user@user-pc ~]$ locale
LANG=ru_RU.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="ru_RU.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC=ru_RU.UTF-8
LC_TIME=ru_RU.UTF-8
LC_COLLATE="ru_RU.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY=ru_RU.UTF-8
LC_MESSAGES="ru_RU.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER=ru_RU.UTF-8
LC_NAME=ru_RU.UTF-8
LC_ADDRESS=ru_RU.UTF-8
LC_TELEPHONE=ru_RU.UTF-8
LC_MEASUREMENT=ru_RU.UTF-8
LC_IDENTIFICATION=ru_RU.UTF-8
LC_ALL=

Probably these settings should be the same?
And are they probably more correct in Debian than in Manjaro?

But it no depends on me, but on the Manjaro installer.
In that case, it’s his mistake.

How can I find the author of these assemblies and report this fatal error to him?

It turns out that it manifests itself not only in the MC via SSH, but even in local applications!!! :face_exhaling:

Here’s an example:

I am currently using the [Dev 20231009] build(Release Dev 20231009 · manjaro-arm/gtking-pro-images · GitHub ) this talented author.

During this time, he has already released two new builds :

and

Unfortunately, this fatal problem has not been fixed in these new distributions too.
I would like to write a bug report to this author, but I don’t know how to do it :roll_eyes:

is missing from Manjaro ARM settings. I don’t know if that’s the cause of your problem but is easy to find out - just edit /etc/locale.conf and add that line below LANG=ru_RU.UTF-8. Not sure if reboot is required after doing that.

1 Like

I did it:

added a line

LANG=ru_RU.UTF-8

to /etc/locale.conf

Then reboot.

Unfortunately, the problem persisted for MC via SSH and Shredder :roll_eyes:

I would like @LordTermor to help us on this.

As he must be aware if russian language configs.

I am maintaining Beelink device images, but as I am not using any language other than English, I cannot reproduce this. My suspect would be missing fonts, if you say all the locales are configured correctly.

My suspect would be missing fonts

Iit seems to me that Cyrillic fonts are enough in the distribution, because when I use applications, Ukrainian and Russian fonts in them and texts are displayed normally.
