Already Tried

  • Removing video-vesa: > sudo mhwd -r pci video-vesa
Error: config 'video-vesa' is not installed!

  • Reinstalling video-modesetting: > sudo mhwd -i pci video-modesetting -f

  • checking DEFAULT_SESSION in ~/.xinitrc: DEFAULT_SESSION=startplasma-x11

  • Restarting display: > startplasma-x11
$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server.

  • Reinstalling graphics drivers: sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300 -f (successful but no change)

  • Deleting /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Possible Causes

  • optimus-manager related (have tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail)
  • kde ricing (was playing at time of break)
  • kernel update (recently updated) (how would I go about rolling this back?)
  • set-intel.tty file missing (how can I generate?)

Bonus

Looking for an intermediate-friendly explaination of whats going wrong and possible fixes!

Also if not possible to easily fix, how would I go about backing up whatever I can (e.g. home dir) an fresh installing?

Thx

As you seem to be able to use a TTY, have you tried:

  • Removing all video drivers
  • Reboot
  • reinstalling video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime only
  • Reboot again.

No luck unfortunatly. I think I will just try to backup what I can and reinstall from flash drive. Very Frustrating.

What’s the output to:

tail --lines=50 /var/log/Xorg.0.log

The most recent kernel 5.10 is 5.10.49.

Can you update the system via console ?

Did as suggested (tried both 5.10.35-rt and 5.12) Now getting a different but related error message (where it hangs):

[ OK ] Started Simple Desktop Display Manager.
[ OK ] Reached target Graphical Interface.
_

I guess that is a minor impovement… but still no cigar.

Can you post all of the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log ?
Especially the (EE) = errors.

I’ve just decided to reinstall :frowning:

In that case, please read this:

:crossed_fingers:

Then you should use the latest Iso image: Manjaro Linux - Browse Files at SourceForge.net
