"Failed to Start Remount Root and Kernel file Systems" - that seems bad ......? Multi boots!

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently been getting this message on shutdown and startup :
“Failed to Start Remount Root and Kernel file Systems”

Anything that fails to start cant be a good thing ?
You might think my system a little strange - but it works for me (most of the time).

I have 6 drives made up of 2 SSD’s and 4 harddrives.
On main 1TB SSD I have Manjaro.
On one small SSD drive I have Win10
On one drive I distro hop and currently have Ubuntu.
The other 3 drives I use for data and backups - including Timeshift and Deja Dup.

The drives are all hard switched - I can disconnect them via physical radio buttons on front of PC.

I recently tried to add Blender 3 to Manjaro - that broke the system and this is now a clean install from the live media.

Since then I’ve had this strange boot message, and sometimes boot fails completely and there’s just a black screen. My only option in that time is to power down and restart.

When I reinstalled Manjaro, I updated and rebuilt Grub - which is good because now have a Menu to select which drive (and therefore Manajaro, Ubuntu or Win10) boots.

Prior to this I had been F2 to jump into BIOS and then select which drive has the boot priority.

The other strange thing is that Restart never works - that gets into a blackscreen and fails. If I want to restart (say after fiddling with resolutions) then I have to shutdown - not restart and until recently be quick on F2 to select the right boot device.

Oh - I also have a KVM Switch so I can share keyboard and mouse and monitor and ethernet with a Work laptop…

Mad setup
So any advice - how do I make my multi-boot system behave better ?

you are very likely missing/not including some context here

… on first glance,
… maybe … yes

Is there anything that actually does not work
… as intended?

The only thing that seems to go haywire is Restart.

So, If I shutdown now, I’ll get some messages - including the “Failed to start remount root …” message and power off.
Power back on - Grub menu - selection of all three drives with OS and can boot into any of them.

However, if I choose Restart - which is sometimes required after adjusting settings, then the Restart doesnt happen - it hangs at the bios screen until eventually I can choose which drive to boot from.
I can then boot into another OS, then shutdown, once power down, I can power on again and Disk 1 is active and i get the Menu choice for any of my 3 OS disks.

So yes - Restart doesn’t work properly on Manjaro.

thanks

J

… oh well
from what I can see:
it does (work properly)
