Failed to start Live-System on Ryzen/RX550

amd
kde

#1

I have a new pc and want to install the latest KDE-Release of Manjaro. But the start of the Live-System end with the message
Started TLP system startup/shutdown

Here are the specifications of my pc:
Mainboard: MSI X370 SLI Plus
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1700
GPU: Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 550 4GD5
SSD: Crucial MX300
Here is the link to my inxi-output: Dump your inxi -Fxzc0 here and bookmark it

I tried the KDE versions 17.0.3, 17.0.4 and 17.0.5 after burning on DVD. I also tried KDE version 17.0.5 on USB-Stick and XFCE version 17.0.3 on DVD. The behavior is the same.

I found on this forum similar issues and tried the following boot-parameter (one after the other, not all together):
radeon-drm.modeset=1
acpi_osi=! acpi_osi="Windows 2009"
xdriver=vesa
systemd.mask=mhwd-live.service radeon.modeset=0

All starts ends with the TLP-message or a blackscreen.

To my opinion the GPU should work with Manjaro. Can someone give me a hint, what I can try to solve the issue?

The installation of Windows 10 and Ubuntu Gnome 17.04 runs without issues. But I want to use Manjaro, as on my old PC.

Thanks in advance.

Matthias

Update running Manjaro 17.x with a Sapphire RX550
#2

Hello,

If you can please include this command in your post. It will help everyone in knowing exactly what type of equipment you have. I know you posted it, but this give a lot more information.

#3

@yawanthan, done.

Matthias

#4

the creation of the boot medium makes a huge difference. Tools like YUMI or others will not produce working boot sticks.

SuSe imagewriter is working without issues though.

#5

I use
dd bs=4M if=/mnt/DS/public/manjaro-kde-17.0.5-stable-x86_64.iso of=/dev/sdc status=progress
to create the USB-stick and K3B to create the DVDs.

I have no SuSe-installation and so cannot use SuSe imagewriter. Besides, the USB-stick and the DVDs boot without problems. Only the start of graphical system don’t work.

Matthias

#6

the imagewriter is available in a lot of distributions. It is not Suse-only

dd however should also work. not sure what the problem is in that case, then

#7

Have you tried both “free” and “nonfree” options from the boot screen?

#8

the nonfree driver is non-existent on all RX graphic cards
That could be a reason.

#9

Don’t own an RX card, so had no idea.

But the option might still be in the boot menu, så make sure it’s booting with “free” option.

#10

I tried both “free” and “nonfree”. It makes no difference.

Matthias

#11

Another information:
The cursor is blinking fast, when reach the message “Started TLP system startup/shutdown”. A reboot is possible with STRG+ALT+ENTF. Switch to another console is possible, but no interaction. I cannot login for example because the keyboard is not working correct.

Matthias

#12

I start the Live-system with parameter 3 and so have only a console. I create in this environment again the inxi-output: Dump your inxi -Fxzc0 here and bookmark it

And I try “startx”. It fails, but here is the Xorg.log.0:

it looks like your system does try to load the ati driver, which is not compatible with AMD RX cards and then decides to load no driver at all, not even modesetting.

You would need to force the system to use amdgpu driver, but I am not sure how one can do that.

@philm is that a general error in the install media?

#14

I try with parameter xdriver=amdgpu, but this ends too with the message “Started TLP system startup/shutdown”.

Matthias

#15
grep -i "amdgpu" /proc/modules
grep -i "radeon" /proc/modules

please. The kernel module is important and thats what xorg asks for, when deciding if ati or amdgpu. Also please the output of

mhwd
lspci -nnk | grep -i VGA -A2

#16

grep -i “amdgpu” /proc/modules
and
grep -i “radeon” /proc/modules
give both no output.

Output of mhwd:

you cant do that, it needs to load itself at boottime to make KMS (kerne based modesettings) work.

journalctl -b -p err

would be interesting to see. Seems like you system just dont loads up any driver, but still shows that card

Here is the output from journalctl -b -p err:
