External (thunderbolt) monitor frequently freezes

I have been using Manjaro on my Asus FX566HEB-HN249T laptop for the last two years. I have an external monitor and a few peripherals connected over a thunderbolt dock.

Recently, when I am trying to use certain applications like Chrome, GIMP, Shotcut my 2nd monitor (connected over thunderbolt) freezes. The primary monitor keeps working but the second one doesn’t work unless I unplug and re-plug my thunderbolt dock. Interestingly, this freezing behavior is triggered by certain actions, like right clicking on a link in chrome or resizing an image in GIMP, or often even resizing a window to be full screen leading me to believe this is something to do with software rather than hardware.

Here are some details

This is getting to be extremely annoying. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

For thunderbolt there is another recommended readaing

I didn’t find my model number in the first link. And I removed supergfxctl, asusctl because they were causing problems with a new kernel.

Should I reinstall?

I installed the asusctl and supergfxctl package, the issue still persists.

I didn’t glean much from the thunderbolt page. Did install the plasma-thunderbolt package and reboot. Should this be enough?
