External monitor no longer appears as an output device

I’m no longer able to use my Nvidia Pascal (1070Ti) GPU with this update. I replaced the nvidia-575 packages with nvidia-580 as others in this thread (which this post was split from) have, but my external monitor no longer appears as an output device, though the GPU itself still appears to be detected.

I’m using Manjaro Stable, KDE Plasma 6, and Wayland, running the latest LTS kernel. eDP-1 is my laptop’s internal screen.

When I log out, the greeter does work via the nvidia card, I’m able to see it on my external monitor (connected only via the nvidia card). When I log in using X11, I get no output on either screen (possibly unsurprising as my X11 config isn’t maintained). When I log in as a newly-created test account, the problem is the same.

fc-cache -r made no difference to any of these issues.

I tried holding back all of the nvidia updates using IgnorePkg and running the rest, unfortunately (but unsurprisingly) that left me with a system that didn’t display anything on either screen. Timeshifted back to before the update for now (in the hope that someone here has a good suggestion, or that I think of something else to try).

I’ve tried updating my kernel to 7.1.3 and trying the update again, which gave me the second behaviour (no plasmashell on either screen - external monitor continued to show the disk encryption prompt, internal screen showed boot messages and could be switched to other TTYs and used, but no DE could be started).

Here’s the output of inxi -zv8, first with the working 575 drivers:

At face value, I might suggest reversing that decision, especially as there was no issue with the 575xx driver series (as your inxi output demonstrates).

Remaining with kernel 6.18 (LTS) is suggested if that combination was working for you.

Edit:- I have compiled the following information which may possibly be useful for general reference:

Under Notable Package Updates in the Stable Update 2026-07-11 announcement topic, it was stated that:

When packages are from the main repositories they are sometimes dropped to the AUR. However, all I can find is nvidia-575xx-dkms, in this instance:

It’s important to note that this is by no means a recommendation to use these drivers – only informing that they are available.

I have not found 570xx drivers available via the AUR, at this time. Perhaps @philm or @Yochanan might shed some light on this.

Additionally, under Known issues and solutions (on 2026-05-02) in Issues with updating Kernels due to Nvidia drivers:

Also noted was:

So, regardless, users of Nvidia 570xx, 575xx or 580xx series drivers, appear to be limited to kernel 6.18 (LTS) as it is the last kernel series to support those drivers.

While I have no concrete suggestion to workaround your issue, this information is at least consolidated, in case it may be useful.

So far that’s what I’ve done. I’m happy to keep using my system as is, except for the fact that my other packages are going to start falling out of date. It was my understanding that updating some but not all packages isn’t really a supported or intended use case; hence:

Unless there’s a different way I’m missing that I should use to update everything else but remain on nvidia-575xx.

Regarding the solution posted in https://forum.manjaro.org/t/mobile-gtx-1070-hdmi-monitor-not-detected-with-580xx-drivers - I already had this, so no chance of it being my fix:

# cat /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modeset
Y

6.18 is a long-term-support kernel. Upon the next system update, it will receive bug fixes and security patches, and it will continue doing so until at least December 2028, but the version number will remain at 6.18 — only the number indicating the patch level will go up.

You should always keep your entire system up-to-date.

I realise that, that’s why I posted my problem in the update thread (and then this thread) - I’m unable to use my computer (LTS kernel or otherwise) after updating, so I’m trying to find a solution that will let me update my system again.

There is always the nouveau driver. It’s GPL’d and included in the kernel. It’s not as functional as the proprietary driver, but at least it’ll always be supported.

I’ve run the update then uninstalled all nvidia drivers from my system, so I’ve only got nouveau available, and rebooted. My DE no longer starts on its own but starts after running startplasma-wayland. However, it still only appears on the laptop’s in-built screen and not on the monitor connected to the nvidia card - i.e. the symptoms are almost identical.

What I’ve got installed, specifically:

❯ mhwd --listinstalled
> Installed PCI configs:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  NAME VERSION FREEDRIVER TYPE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
     video-modesetting 2020.01.13 true PCI
           video-linux 2024.05.06 true PCI

I then rolled back to the working state (2026-06-26 update with nvidia-575 drivers) and removed all nvidia drivers again, and rebooted with nouveau. The behaviour was exactly the same.

I’m starting to suspect that when I had nvidia-580xx installed, I was actually using nouveau, because it’s too much of a coincidence that they’d be broken identically - the only indicator I had that the proprietary driver was in use was the inxi output.

This then would seem to be a resolution to your problem.

A suggestion is to again, roll back to that point.

The obvious problem there is that Nvidia 570xx and 575xx series drivers are no longer provided via the official Manjaro repositories…

However, such a problem is indeed able to be overcome – as previously mentioned – nvidia-575xx-dkms is available via the AUR, albeit not having been updated since 2025-12-15:

My understanding is that Dynamic Kernel Module Support (DKMS) automatically rebuilds kernel modules1 (in this case nvidia.ko, nvidia-drm.ko, nvidia-modeset.ko, nvidia-uvm.ko) whenever the Linux kernel is updated.2

  1. These out-of-tree modules interface directly with the kernel for modesetting, GPU and memory management.
  2. Again, refer to the comment from @Aragorn:
  • Without DKMS: Kernel updates can break Nvidia drivers – the module becomes incompatible and you need to manually reinstall.
  • With DKMS: After each kernel upgrade, it’s automatically recompiled against the new kernel headers, keeping the display working across reboots.

To utilise DKMS on Manjaro, rather than using the nvidia package the nvidia-dkms package (and the matching linux*-nvidia-* headers) are used instead to achieve the desired behaviour.

If you decide to take this route and find that guidance is needed, please open a new dedicated Support topic where others will have a clearly defined objective, and be able to help more effectively.

Regards.

After several more failed attempts with dkms packages, I’ve finally had time to look at this again, and managed to solve it. My error was here:

I did have that (on the pre-update nvidia-575xx system), but once I’d upgraded to nvidia-580xx, I no longer had that. I never thought to recheck it after the update, but just assumed it’d stick.

I’ve now performed the full update again, and added this file:

$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-modeset.conf
options nvidia_drm modeset=1 fbdev=1

This has reinstated modesetting, which has completely solved my issue.
