Since the last update Youtube video stuttering in firefox

Once in a while and for 5 seconds, the video stops, stutters (has hiccups as described by this user that seem to have had a similar issue). For me the sound keeps playing but the video stops and shakes on one frame with tearing

I have had the problem in the past but at some point it stopped happening (did not note if it was related to an update or something). And now it is back.

Do any people have the same issue and/or have a suggestion on how to fix this when it happens. I have noted that it does not happen in Chrome for some reason.

Maybe you need gpu-accelerated video decoding using the non-free mesa package from here: https://nonfree.eu/

According to your inxi, your RAM is nearly maxed out, and you’re using a lot of your swap as well, under these conditions it’s not surprising Youtube is having issues.

I understand what you are pointing out but I have watched a youtube video with almost maxed out RAM and swap and yet had no issues before the latest update.
I’ll try to be careful about that to see if it changes anything though.

I think it has to do with:

Oh wow I indeed had a problem of applications slow to start (calculator that I use several times a day took several looong seconds to launch)

Although I read the solution and the links explaining the why, I did not really understand the issue.

But I executed the recommended commands and it works! THANKS!
Edit: it did fix the issue of slow launching certain apps (calculator, LibreOffice, Thunderbird took way too long, now almost instant). But it in fact did not fix the youtube video stuttering.
I checked my task manager: 0% swap, 30% memory used, 1% processor, and yet when watching a video I get tearing and stuttering every now and then. What’s bizarre is that I was able to watch a 15 minutes videos without issue… and now a 10 minutes video it happens 5 times

Just want to add that the problem persists even when the computer is not doing any other calculations.

It sounds like possibly an issue of HW-accel … but if it wasnt set up properly before, I dont know why it would suddenly start giving problems now.
