Hello,

I have a feeling others have this problem too but it is so confusing to me I can’t understand solutions offered in other threads so any help is really appreciated.

I am using Manjaro KDE on a laptop connected to two external monitors. I have a multi-boot setup so when I boot up initially I get the grub bootloader screen, which appears on both monitors, and I can choose which OS to boot in to so I choose Manjaro but then the external monitors loose signal and they go blank and start going to sleep… the monitors display the message “No signal”. If I wiggle the mouse and press keys on the keyboard the monitors come back on.

Sometimes on one of the monitors the desktop is black like in this screenshot I made showing the display on both external monitors right after a boot up:

The desktop on that left monitor is still usable, just the background is black.

I’m not really sure how to debug but I found this command in another thread so I ran it right after the problem happened:

If I run this command:
kquitapp5 plasmashell && kstart5 plasmashell

…it fixes things but next time I reboot I will probably have the same problem and sometimes it occurs even while I am already booted… the displays flicker and loose signal so I have to press keys on the keyboard and they come back on.

What is the problem here? I haven’t done a fresh Manjaro install for around 2 years. Do I need to re-install everything or what other debugging could I do please?

Cheers,

Flex

I’m old enough that that :point_up_2: sounds like some kind of loose connection. So possibly a hardware kind of problem.

Or something. And this:

…sounds like the background image isn’t yet available to load. Which can be, is likely, due to the file not being available due to the reason mentioned above.

I’d recommend sorting that out before worrying about anything else. Who knows? The problems might be fixed with that.

Thanks @Mirdarthos

I checked the display port cable connections. The cables are not not loose. The external monitors are connected to the laptop via a powered Thinkpad dock.

I don’t understand your suggestion about the background file image not yet being available to load or what the reasons for that would be?

When I run this command:
kquitapp5 plasmashell && kstart5 plasmashell

… it fixes the issue of the black desktop.

If I have problems with my display port cable connections, which I might have but I don’t know that for sure, how would that cause the desktop background image on the left monitor to not load?

Flex

If the disk is faulty, it might not be mounted at the time which plasma tried to access to image to show the desktop. So that might be because of a faulty disk.

a Good place to start with checking it, but by no means definitive, is doing a S.M.A.R.T. test:

  1. Make sure smartmontools is installed:

    pamac install smartmontools

  2. Do the test:

    sudo smartctl --all /dev/sda

Analyse the output, or provide it here if you wish for others to take a look.

Hello,

I ran these commands:

sudo smartctl --all /dev/sda
[flex@thinkpad Smart Plug]$ sudo smartctl --all /dev/sda

I think there were one or two errors but if a disk problem was causing a desktop background image file to not load surely that would affect both external monitors and not just the left monitor?

Cheers,

Flex

Was thinking the same thing, but it might have been a time related thing. I really, really don’t know.

But both tests PASSED so all I can think of is a timing issue? I don’t know. I really don’t.

How is your $HOME, or if different your Pictures’ location mounted?

Switch to Wayland and test if it’s repro.

I tried switching from x11 to Wayland.

I logged out and then from the login screen I chose plasma-wayland but after I type in my password it goes to a black screen with a blinking prompt then after a few seconds it goes back to the login screen again.

When I switch back to plasma-x11 I can log in fine with the same username and password.

Google a bit and see lots of people have had this issue with black screen when trying to log in using Wayland. I tried creating a new User and logging in as that user but got the same problem.

Maybe I am not enabling Wayland correctly? I do not have an nVidia graphics card by the way only an integrated graphics card.

Or else I just need to do a fresh install… the dread.
