External microphone not working

Hi there,
I am basically trying to get my external microphone to work with KDE but it doesn’t seem to be recognised with KDE
I have an Intel laptop with 8th gen i5. When I conect my microphone to the headphone/mic combo port it detects a headphoe but no mic. This an external mic only. I am unsure what to do. Oh and yes I have set the mode to Analogue stero duplex.
Also this is the output of pacmd list cards

Depending on the actual jacks on your microphone and inside your computer (the hardware), you might need a converter jack that just lengthens the microphone jack just a little bit and isolates the output of the computer jack, so the only advice we can give is:

  • Take your microphone and computer to a high-end audio shop and show them what your problem is and they’ll tell you:
    • Isle 5, take the XKCD-841 male-female plug. Good stuff!

:grin:

I can see from data system is HP Pavilion x360 with Coffee Lake CPU

Pulseaudio data shows that the onboard card is detected

1 card(s) available.
    index: 0
        name: <alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1f.3>

                alsa.card = "0"
                alsa.card_name = "HDA Intel PCH"

                alsa.driver_name = "snd_hda_intel"

                device.bus = "pci"
                device.vendor.id = "8086"
                device.vendor.name = "Intel Corporation"
                device.product.id = "9d71"
                device.product.name = "Sunrise Point-LP HD Audio"

but the external microphone (analog-input-mic) is not available

     ports:
                analog-input-internal-mic: Internal Microphone (priority 8900, latency offset 0 usec, available: unknown)
                        properties:
                                device.icon_name = "audio-input-microphone"
                analog-input-mic: Microphone (priority 8700, latency offset 0 usec, available: no)
                        properties:
                                device.icon_name = "audio-input-microphone"

It is possible that microphone capture is not enabled in ALSA
please post response to

amixer --card=0

but it is also possible that the headset jack is not correctly detecting the microphone part of the jack connection, and may require a kernel patch for headset microphone
(which has probably already been worked out for older generation systems)
please post response to

lspci -vnn | grep -A1 Audio

so i can check the device ID number for a kernel patch

please also post response to

sudo dmesg | grep snd

to show if the microphone jack connection is detected in ALSA

I think my microphone has that built-in. There is a switch for it which requires a battery. The other thing is it was working a week ago and now it won’t even work

axamixer --card=0

Something is seriously wrong with my machine. Just now I restarted my machine and it all started to work again which is wierd. I’ve restarted my machine a thousand times and this hasn’t happend before. Well, maybe it’s just luck then.
