Error Logging Into Plasma After Hard Reboot

I got myself in trouble. I hope you can help me get back my Manjaro Plasma theme. When I was shutting down Manjaro, the shut down and the log off, both, were unresponsive. I waited a few minutes and tried to shut down again. There was no response again. I tried “control+alt+delete” combination. A bad habit from my Windows days! The screen switched to black screen with white bold letters, stating that such option (“control+alt+delete” combination) was not available and suggested “control+alt+f2” instead.

When I tried “control+alt+f2”, I ended up in terminal screen and tried a few things and could not go back to the desktop theme. So, I made the mistake of powering off the computer, holding down the power button.

When I turned the computer back on, a totally different login screen came up with the message below.

“Select your user and enter password” (in white letters.)

(And continued the message below in red letters)

“The current theme cannot be loaded due to the errors below, please select another theme.”

“file:///usr/share/sddm/themes/breath/Main.qml:26:1:plugin cannot be loaded for module “org.kde.plasma.core”: Cannot load library /usr/lib/qt/qml/org/kde/plasma/core/libcorebindingsplugin.so: (libplist-2.0.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)

Located in the top left corner, the login screen provided me with “Session” option to choose from, with a drop down list. The drop down Session list had the options below to choose from.

GNOME on Wayland (Wayland)
GNOME (Wayland)
Deepin
GNOME on Xorg
GNOME
Plasma (X11)

When I chose “Plasma (X11)”, which was my Manjaro theme, to login and entered my password, it looped back to the very same login screen as if “Plasma (X11)” didn’t exist.

Is there any possible way to get back my Manjaro Plasma theme? I spent so much time and energy to customize widgets on desktop and set them up and everything so meticulously. It was so useful, functional, not to mention!, “pleasing” to boot up Manjaro to my desktop theme and see all the info, I needed, displayed “live” on my desktop. Even if I had all the time and energy to do everything all over again, I don’t even remember how I did all that stuff. It was a long time ago. I use Manjaro as my main operating system. I really, truly DON’T want to reinstall it from scratch again! Please help!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Ctrl Alt F1 will put you back if this happens again.

As for troubleshooting this issue, time to use the same thing that you got stuck on earlier. Use Ctrl Alt F2, enter your username and password, and you will be logged into a very bare-bones CLI. What happens if you enter the following command?

ls /usr/lib/qt/qml/org/kde/plasma/core/libcorebindingsplugin.so

Thank you, fasto, for responding my posting. I appreciate it!

If I had known that before and pressed “Control+Alt+F1”, it would have taken me back to the desktop theme as you suggested.

Now, after whatever happened?!?, “Control+Alt+F1” only takes me back to the weird login screen or it takes me to whatever theme I select and login in order to use Manjaro.

It is as if the Plasma theme vanished into thin air or got deleted or wiped out! I am not saying that it is wiped out or deleted as a fact. I’m just making an assumption from the feedback I’m getting from Manjaro.

When I tried to launch “Konsole” to type the command below,

ls /usr/lib/qt/qml/org/kde/plasma/core/libcorebindingsplugin.so

the mouse pointer turned into rotating arrow in circles as it normally does, and nothing happened. Meaning, Manjaro could not even launch “Konsole”.

In order to login and use Manjaro, I selected GNOME as theme. With this theme, Manjaro is very sluggish, and at times unresponsive to some apps. Things are so weird. It is literally worse than installing Manjaro “on virtual machine”. I mean, is it because Manjaro was natively installed on “Plasma”, and now it is forced to boot up to “GNOME”, and most things installed under “Plasma” are not compatible to operate under “GNOME”? Is that what it is…? I can’t even go into Settings to change my screen resolution. Everything under “Settings” is grayed out. When I go into “Display”, “Resolution” is grayed out. There is no option for resolution to select. Sorry! I’m going off topic! I didn’t mean to rant!

Since I could not launch “Konsole” through normal means, I had to press “Control+Alt+F2” to take me to terminal (Konsole). When I typed the command below,

ls /usr/lib/qt/qml/org/kde/plasma/core/libcorebindingsplugin.so

As a response, one line below, it simply and exactly typed the destination below in green letters and did nothing else!

/usr/lib/qt/qml/org/kde/plasma/core/libcorebindingsplugin.so

I think the response I got was a bit promising because, at least, I didn’t get “No such file or directory” response. I’m just assuming!

Thanks again, fasto!

Why does your system have GNOME? Did you install it, and if so, when?

Hello fasto! Good to hear from you again! I have no idea whatsoever, why my system has “GNOME”. It is baffling and beyond me! I never ever installed GNOME in the first place. From the first day, I selected and installed “Plasma”, nothing else! and fell in love with it and set up widgets and everything and never looked back.

The login screen (that I’m unfortunately stuck with) provides me with 3 selections (themes) in the drop down option to choose from. Please see below for these options. I’m literally pulling my hair out because “what is NOT installed in the first place” is an option to choose and ironically it is at least letting me (allowing me to) log in to Manjaro. And… “what is natively installed” is there (Plasma X11) as an option, but it is NOT even letting me log in to Manjara and looping and taking me back to the same login screen when I try to log in.

  1. GNOME

  2. Deepin (I never ever installed “Deepin” either!?! The Deepin desktop theme is more problematic than “GNOME” as it is far worse and unresponsive than “GNOME”. At least, with GNOME, I’m able to get around things and get things done to a degree. With Deepin, the operating system is more paralyzed.)

  3. Plasma (X11) (which is what I want! But as I indicated above, it doesn’t let me log in to Manjaro. Thus, I’m stuck selecting “GNOME” or “Deepin”.)

the gnome an deepin desktops were installed as a dependency of some package you installed…
in the log in screen or what have you, enter into tty: ctrl+alt+f2 or f1-f6 keys, enter your username and password, and rerun update:
sudo pacman-mirrors --fasttrack 5 && sudo pacman -Syyu
if you are up to date and there were no errors, run this:
sudo ldconfig
this should return nothing; if it doesnt and the output is not long post picture of it; if it returns nothing, post output from:
pacman -Qs 'gnome|deepin'

Hi brahma! As you suggested, I executed the command below. And it did the update without any error.

sudo pacman-mirrors --fasttrack 5 && sudo pacman -Syyu

When I ran the command below, it returned no result as you stated.

sudo ldconfig

Here is my question and my problem: when I ran the command below,

pacman -Qs ‘gnome|deepin’

It listed “a long list of things”. And because I am in the environment of “Control+Alt+F2”, I am NOT able to scroll up or down to take the complete picture of the whole list (with my phone), other than whatever it listed at the very bottom of the screen. So, where do I go from here? And how can I provide you with more information to help you help me? Please let me know.

Thank you.

dont you have mouse cursor? arrows dont work for scrolling? try shift+arrow up/down… if still nothing, post output from:
pacman -Qs gnome
and
pacman -Qs deepin

When in “Control+alt+f2” environment, the mouse cursor doesn’t work! Arrows (up and down) don’t work! Trying “shift+arrow up/down” does not work. The “shift+arrow up/down” option only types the previously entered command rather than scrolling up or down.

Basically, being in “Control+alt+f2” environment is worse then being in GRUB konsole (terminal). When you’re in GRUB terminal, at least you can scroll up and down, but not in my situation.

So, when you ask me to post the output of both

pacman -Qs gnome
and
pacman -Qs deepin

Both commands list a laundry list of things on the screen which I am not able to scroll up and down to capture even with my phone. I’m stuck here. It’s like “catch 22”.

well it looks like scrolling from tty was removed :unamused:
so post picture only of whats being shown from those 2 command, that should be enough to remove gnome and deepin

Don’t think it was ever a feature. You do something like pipe it to less.

@BIZDIK try the commands below:

pacman -Qs gnome | less
pacman -Qs deepin | less

You should be able to scroll up and down with your arrow keys, and you can exit from it by pressing q.

fasto & brahma, thank you both for stepping in to help me!

Back to the topic on hand! The terminal, called “Konsole” which was previously installed doesn’t work, I think, because it is not compatible with GNOME. So, I went ahead and installed a GNOME terminal and now I’m able to run this terminal in the desktop environment. Thus, I’m able to move up and down, and even copy and paste! Good news! YAY…!!!

Here is my next question, brahma! Since I’m only able to log in to Manjaro through GNOME and deepin, both options are the only means to access Manjaro. Yes, Plasma (X11) theme is available to select at the login screen but it doesn’t let me log in to Manjaro. So, Plasma (X11) theme is no use for the time being. If we delete GNOME and deepin, will I NOT lock myself out of Manjaro? Isn’t it risky? Just curious!

if we only did this, than yes, you would not be able to log in into plasma because:

so that you are now in desktop, reinstall this:
sudo pacman -S libplist
if no errors, reboot and try login into plasma… if it doesnt work, log into gnome, and rename these folders in your home directory:
.cache and .config
to:
.cache.bak and .config.bak
reboot and try login with plasma

Upon running sudo pacman -S libplist, I received the response below. Should I go ahead and press “y” to remove libplist-git?

resolving dependencies…
looking for conflicting packages…
:: libplist and libplist-git are in conflict. Remove libplist-git? [y/N]

Tell me… right before this problem happened, did you install updates?

Yes, right before I had this problem with the Plasma theme, the package manager prompted that there were a few updates. 3 or 4 updates as I remember! not too many! I think one of them was LibreWolf browser update. I don’t remember the other ones. All I remember is that they were minor, only app related updates. They were not kernel or any other Manjaro updates.

A tip for the future: if you perform updates right before something breaks, that’s probably the reason. Choose yes on the pacman prompt to switch to the main libplist instead of the AUR one. Afterwards, go into Pamac settings and disable AUR updating, it is not a well-designed feature and leads to issues like this one.

In Pamac settings, “Enable AUR support” was enabled, but “Check for updates” was always disabled. But in either case, as you recommended, whatever was enabled for AUR, I disabled them now.

Due to dependency requirement, I was not able to remove “libplist-git”. Please see the message below.

sudo pacman -S libplist
resolving dependencies…
looking for conflicting packages…
:: libplist and libplist-git are in conflict. Remove libplist-git? [y/N] y
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: removing libplist-git breaks dependency ‘libplist-git’ required by libusbmuxd-git

When I tried to remove “libusbmuxd-git”, I couldn’t remove it because “something else” required “libusbmuxd-git”. It branches out like a tree (like a domino effect). I’m sure you have something up your sleeve to successfully remove libplist-git.

Thats yet another thing that is in the repos …
Please follow the tree … maybe we will find why you have all these gits…

pactree -r libplist-git

You can also print all the ‘foreign’ packages:

pacman -Qm

Here is the output of pactree -r libplist-git
