I am reading that plasma 6.7 will be the last version to have X11 support.
I still haven’t made the switch to wayland because there still are way too many issues for me to deal with, and many of the applications I have grown accustomed to do not work well.
From strange scaling artifacts, and strange mouse acceleration to, Kfrb unattended access not working, and gpu screen recorder not being able to record windows.
Even Steam on Nvidia doesn’t work well on wayland. The last time I tried it, the application window would spawn totally transparent and I would be seeing my desktop instead of Steam.
Will plasma have a fork that stays on an older version that works, or will I be forced into updating to something that doesn’t meet my needs?
For this particular thing, i mean for running games, i don’t use Plasma but LXQt - of course not with KWin (this would conflict with Plasma) but one can use openbox (if one needs X) or labwc (sort of openbox like wayland compositor). Why wasting RAM for Plasma if one doesn’t use it? Rather the RAM should go to the game, shouldn’t it?
as much as there are those fringe cases that still require X11 for full functionality (in my case deskflow), continued feature support is slowly but surely tipping towards wayland whether we like it or not. i’m sure its got everything to do with all major DE jumping ship. wayland would have to come up with feature frameworks for screen sharing and input device control/sharing fast. i’m sure more effort would go into wayland now that these features are essential requirement now it is only session endorsed by DE enmasse.
i was 50:50 on both session types. but since of late chrome(ium) hardware acceleration only works in wayland now. and muti-monitor support has lot more stability and features for sometime now. i have reasonably found replacement for most X11 only applications.
I intend to keep X11 functional as long as possible for when it is essential. current plan is to keep iceWM (which has had minimum issues sharing user-directories with plasma, nothing plasma cache reset cant fix). i’m not usre whher it is possible going forward though.
well in my case, using plasma vs anything lighter means, what first-grade DE functionality i’m willing lose for maybe about 400MB+ additional RAM use. relevant maybe if you got only 8GB of RAM, but trivial if you got 16GB.
as for how heavy overhead it has, plasma 6.x seems bit heavier compared to plasma 5.x but still way lighter than gnome IMO.
Those are pretty much quintessential examples of applications that have had to be redesigned from the ground up for Wayland’s security model.
That said, a lot of these rough edges have been improving steadily.
Would RustDesk be a viable alternative? I haven’t used simultaneous desktop sharing software in quite a while, but it appears to have good Wayland support these days.
Screen recording sounds even simpler as there are a lot of options, but I’m sure I’m missing something.

In any case, since this is unsupported from us anyway and to avoid all kind of weird problems, the only sensible thing is to start with a clean slate. If it was me, i would do arch the archway (or arch-install) and install it from command line without the need to remove previous plasma.
