Dolphin gets slower and slower on KDE Plasma and Nvidia graphics

Hi,

For over half a year, I’ve been having a problem with Dolphin under KDE Plasma with Wayland.

As soon as I enable previews for any file type, Dolphin gets slower and slower with every directory change and freezes for increasingly longer periods of time.
After 3–4 directory changes, Dolphin becomes completely unusable and hangs most of the time.

It doesn’t matter which file type I enable for previews—even if they’re just text files.

I’m experiencing this problem on my desktop computer with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 graphics card running the latest drivers.

On my Lenovo ThinkPad E16 Gen 2 laptop with an AMD Radeon 660M graphics card and Wayland, I don’t have any problems.

I’ve already tried clearing the cache

rm -fr ~/.cache/*

But that didn’t help either.

Does anyone else have this problem and can help me out?
I’ve been running this system on my desktop computer for about 2 years now. Is it possible that a complete reinstallation of the system with the latest version of Manjaro could solve the problem?

Unfortunately, I don’t have the time right now to completely reset the system due to a suspected issue.

I cannot say I have the issue, but it do surface from time to time. Last time I heard about it was years ago - with Xfce’s Thunar filemanager.

Previews takes time to create, possibly depending of file size. The larger the folder the longer time.

If the folder you are looking at is network mount the time it takes to generate previews increases as every file has to be read in addition to the file list provided by the file system.

You could test like it by allowing the folder to populate all previews before you navigate to the next folder.

I doubt that - although - in the case of a complete reinstall the file-system would be completely rewritten and any file-system errors would be wiped.

You may want to validate your file-system for consistency, the method is different depending on the file-system in use.

I completely reinstalled the system yesterday, but the error is still occurring exactly the same way.

Even if I just navigate through directories that contain one or two empty subdirectories, Dolphin still slows down and then freezes.

However, there’s nothing visible in the processes that would be causing any CPU load.
I can’t find anything in the logs either…

Could you please run the command balooctl6 disable and use ps aux | grep baloo to check whether the process has stopped? Then check whether the problem persists.

Yes, the problem still persists

You can still leave ‘ballo’ disabled for NVMe drives. It just uses up resources and puts unnecessary strain on SSDs.

Have you tried creating a new user and see if there is some general problem that persists across all users’ home, or if it’s only for your current user on the system?

New idea: Have you tried running it as root? Perhaps there is something locking things up in some weird way.

Did you keep the same /home partition untouched? In that case, test with a new user as @qruqs suggests. The problem is not on the Manjaro system itself, but it might be in your user profile.

No, I didn’t restore /home it was a complete reinstallation

I’ve just saved a few folders in the ~/.config, ~/.local, and ~/.var directories so I don’t have to reconfigure various programs.
But nothing that could have anything to do with Dolphin.
