Unusuable performance issues in new install of Manjaro KDE

Hello, I have never used a forum before so I apologize in advance for any issues with my post.
I am very new to linux and manjaro and I installed manjaro in dual boot with Windows 10. I am having performance issues that manifest as lag, but the mouse has no lag. I have run htop and the system is barely using resources. I am not having this issue in windows. I am running this on a second monitor from a laptop with the laptop screen turned off.
Once again I am very new to this and I would like to have help to help you to help me. Please let me know what I could do to help with finding the issue.
Thanks

better describe “performance issues” - the initial “complaint” :man_shrugging:

Welcome to the forum. You’re doing just fine, and can do even better if you take a quick read through the first three pinned posts in the Tutorials section of the forum.

They will explain how to describe your problem and how to find the relevant information about your system.

There is like max 2 FPS in all programs despite the mouse being in 60 FPS and very little resource usage.

Some reading and some information about your system can help others help you:

I haven’t seen that kind of (bad) performance even in a VM (virtual machine)

… and I don’t know how you determined the mouse 60 fps vs the overall ~2 fps

info on hardware needed to help you

Obviously its an estimate, I didn’t actually calculate its 2 vs 60.
The point is the mouse has zero lag however the rest of the system is extremely slow even though its not using much of the resources.

it wasn’t “obvious” - it was stated with … confidence :slightly_smiling_face:

actual hardware info could be a start:

In doing my last reply I unplugged my monitor to see if that would help, and now that I am using the laptop screen the performance issues are gone completely. I use my laptop with the lid closed and connected to a monitor usually with the laptop screen disabled. I still do not know what could be causing this issue.

On a fresh install the database is indexing (Baloo or Maria I’m not sure) all your files. If the hard drive light is blinking then this is what is happening and it drags your system down. You can turn it off but I don’t know know how. A search should answer how, but I just let it run it’s course which is a few hours.

This isn’t what’s happening because it’s only slow when my laptop is plugged into the second screen. If I open htop the system is using the system resources basically as if it was idle.

I don’t know if this question is still open, but your problems are most likely caused by a bug in the NVIDIA drivers that is around since at least November.
The bug causes these incredible performance issues if you try and use your laptop with the internal screen turned off. There are no problems if you use only the internal screen or both screens at once. As far as I know, there is no solution yet. My workaround for now is to use envycontrol to disable the hybrid mode of the GPU and instead always use the dedicated GPU. Then you can only use the external screen. However, obviously this results in an increased power consumption.

Okay this makes a lot of sense. I’ll try this as soon as I can. Thank you so much.
