Displays Randomly goes black

Hello all,

My initial thought is that my GPU is just dying (or PSU?), but wanted to get a second opinion before I spend money.

I normally have my desktop on 24/7

On Kernel 6.6, I updated to Stable 2024-09-02. Then turned of my desktop and went away for the weekend.

Came back, booted, and I don’t remember the displays turning on for bios post.

I forced restarted twice to get displays on.

After that, the GPU seems to crash at random times.

  • Displays will turn black while in use
  • Displays will refuse to turn on after screens go to sleep

Its all random, sometimes it survives the night, sometimes it happens during the day

I do not use suspend or sleep on the OS.

I installed Kernel 6.10 and same problems.

Which Kernel did you used before?

Did you try TTY or crlt+shift+f12 for resetting your desktop?

Did you maybe executed a special demanding task? For example, I recently had problems with a Flatpak program, that lead to a freezing GPU after i closed the application and my GPU was idling for around 5-10min.

Did you try Wayland yet? The most AMD GPU owner’s prefer to run Wayland on KDE.

Kernel 6.6, has same problems

I thought the same, but once I just booted before I went to bed and not running any demanding application, and from the logs it seems to have had problems at 4am when I was asleep, and when I woke up the monitors wouldn’t turn on.

No, how would I go about switching?

On login screen, top left corner, drop down box. Change x11 to wayland

Thanks, I’ll use Wayland and see if the problem happens

KDE has a really strong focus for Wayland with Plasma 6 release. I still use X11 for my nvidia/intel rig but for my AMD Laptop there is no way to evade Wayland.

In sddm it’s in the bottom left corner.
