Display-related issues while trying to play several games

It’s been a few days (I can’t pinpoint exactly when) I’m having issues with my displays.

I first noticed issues when playing THE FINALS. I used to play on my secondary screen, so in joined multiple displays mode; however the mouse started and then kept escaping the focus on the game screen/window and I kept losing control until I could regain focus (by frantically clicking on my gaming screen).

Following advice from this post (the only post I found that really matched my problem) I disabled the Dash to Dock extension; the issue became less frequent but still happened every now and then. So now I’m forced to play on single screen (disabling the other in Settings) for stability.

Then I turned to another game, STRAFTAT, which on ProtonDB is reported to work flawlessly for many users, and then trouble really started: the game only works in joined multiple screens mode, by which I mean that if I only use one screen (the other being disabled) the game just doesn’t display (displays a kind of screenshot of the first millisecond of the start menu). When in joined multiple screens, one of my screen is frozen (just as above), and the other displays the game correctly.

Finally, I have trouble clicking even when not gaming, especially in Steam where I need to try ten times on menu items in order to successfully clicking them. The only thing I could was make sure that in Tweaks the focusing mode was “Click to Focus”, and it was.

All in all, I strongly doubt that this is an issue with the games themselves, and suspect that somehow my laptop has some issue with displays in general, and my dual screens setup in particular. I have otherwise no clue on what may be causing these issues, as I’ve been playing in this precise way for more than a year without an issue.

Yeah that happens when the game window is not exclusive full-screen, but borderless full-screen which is technically a window which aims to be in full-screen without windows decoration.

Well, this game has a native Linux binary. Do you explicitly play it with proton? I have no problem starting it…

Take a look at gnome-tweaks under Windows → Windows Focus.

You’re right, I run the game in borderless full-screen; but even though the exclusive full-screen option does exist in the game settings, it is flagged as “Not recommended” and I can’t select it…

Oh wow, you’re right, for some reason I was forcing the use of Proton! Now I switched back to native, and it’s all right again! Thank you so much.

I’ve edited my post, I forgot to mention that I did make sure that the focusing mode was “Click to Focus”.

Use protontricks to open winecfg inside the prefix of the game and modify the graphic/window settings.
