Discord Unable to Stream in Wayland / KDE Plasma

Description:
Discord screenshare used to work when I installed Manjaro. But a few days ago when I tried to Screen share again, it shows the screenshare dialog box, but does nothing if I click “Make Selection”. I have not received any error messages.

Goal:
I want to use Wayland to perform Screen share on Discord. I am aware that I can try X11 to achieve the same goal. While X11 method works as intended, I would prefer to use Wayland because I mainly stream game sessions on Discord and I haven’t done tinkering on X11 at all.

How It Happened:
Afraid I can’t elaborate on that. It worked on the fresh install, and worked for a few days after that. It just stopped working, and unfortunately I can’t recall if I did a sudo pacman -Syu and caused that to happen.

System Information:

  • Manjaro Version: ManjaroLinux 26.0.3 Ahn-Linh
  • Desktop Environment: KDE Plasma 6.5.5
  • Compositor (Wayland / X11): Wayland
  • Kernel Version: 7.0.0rc5-1
  • xdg-desktop-portal-kde is installed, as per Package Manager.

Softwares related to your problem:

  • Discord
  • Vivaldi* (Please refer to Tried Solutions below)

Tried Solutions:

  • Logging into X11, then log back into Wayland seem to fix this issue only temporarily, then it stops working on restarting Discord in Wayland.
  • Made sure Pipewire / Kpipewire / Wireplumber is installed and attempted to -S them, didn’t work.
  • Tried xwaylandvideobridge: didn’t work either.
  • Vivaldi: Opened discord in Vivaldi, it can stream Vivaldi tabs correctly, but when I click the “Windows Sharing” and “Screen Sharing” tab, they instantly go back to “Tab sharing” (1st tab).
  • Vesktop: Clicking the “Screen Share” button does nothing, not even a dialog box in native Discord window.
  • Changed the kernel from 6.18.20-1 (Recommended) to 6.19-10-1 and 7.0.0rc-5-1, still no luck.
  • Changed the Manjaro from Stable to Testing branch, no luck either.
  • Tried Flatpak Discord, doesn’t work.

Thank you, and please don’t hesitate to inform me for further inquiries / questions.

Did you try with the latest recommended kernel?

Ah forgot to add 2 details:

  1. Changed the kernel from 6.18.20-1 (Recommended) to 7.0.0rc-4-1, still no luck.

  2. Changed the Manjaro from Stable to Testing branch, no luck either.

I’ll add them to the attempts made, thanks for reminding me.

Please add to the list if xdg-desktop-portal-kde is installed and add the output of inxi -zv8.

Thank you for reply. I have done these actions you suggested and will add them to the list in addition to reply here.

  1. xdg-desktop-portal-kde is installed, as per Package Manager.
  2. As for inxi -zv8, it returned a really long list – I shall post the whole thing here and edit the original post as well.

Thanks again.

You’ve tried linux618 & the release candidate of linux70 (RC), but haven’t mentioned if you tried linux619.

The reason I mention this is that my AMD Ryzen 7 5800H (which is a few years older than your CPU) has experienced issues with every RC version of linux70 that I’ve installed, including 7.0.0-rc5-1-MANJARO (I’m on Testing branch too). File downloads would freeze after just a few MB, and moving files in dolphin was painfully slow. The issue has only occurred across multiple RC versions of linux70. I’m not sure of what causes the freezes, but linux70 is clearly not yet ready for daily use. I’m currently happily running linux619.

So, you need to try a kernel that is known not to have any issues with systems running AMD CPUs.

Try linux619, which I’ve found to be very reliable & trouble-free over the months that I have been using it. It might be best to leave linux70 until enough of the bugs have been ironed out for it to be considered suitable for official release.

I’m not saying that linux619 will fix your issue, but at least you won’t be trying to troubleshoot while running a buggy release candidate kernel.

Thanks for your suggestion Scotty. I tried 619, and the problem persists. I shall add that to the list too.

I should just clarify too that I use the ext4 filesystem, while you are using btrfs, so the file writing/moving issues I’ve experienced with the linux70 RC kernel may not happen on your device.

There are a lot of filesystem fixes coming out in linux70 RC6 & most of them relate to ext4:

Linux 7.0 stable is due out on 12 April, however if an extra release candidate is required, then the stable release will be 19 April.

Still, it is best to use a stable kernel such as linux619 while troubleshooting.

The interesting part, for me at least, is why X-11 works, but not Wayland and I couldn’t seem to find a solution around that.

Likely what you experience is a compatibility issue with Discord and KWin (wayland compositor).

Can you downgrade Discord to a previous version compatible with KDE 6.5? It may (or may not) work for you in the meantime.

For me Librewolf Discord streams work on Manjaro stable updated. Though no audio, but that’s a limitation of Discord in regular browsers.

Tested the Flatpak of Discord and i could stream with that with no problem whatsoever.

I must apologise for this one – I actually omitted a detail:

I once tried CachyOS on my other PC, which ran on KDE Plasma too, and streaming from Discord works perfectly fine even in Wayland environment. I omitted this because that PC no longer runs CachyOS; I had to revert back to Windows due to triple monitor issues. But I shall add this to the list of fix attempted. Thanks for pointing this out.

  • Plasma Shell: It’s actually 6.6 now since I’m on Testing Branch (Went back to 7.0.0rc because everything seems to work normally besides Discord, but that’s an issue predates the kernel / plasma updates).
  • Downgrading: It doesn’t seem to work unfortunately, since when I tried manjaro-downgrade, Discord seems to upgrade itself back to the current version.

Tried on LibreWolf. It popped out “Allow Discord.com to see your screen?” Using operating system settings doesn’t do anything and there is no other option. But this makes me wonder if the issue is actually in OS Settings. Will dig into this direction further. Thank you.

Just tried; Flatpak doesn’t work – Rather, behaves exactly the same as the Discord I got from official repository.

At this point I think maybe I have to reinstall Manjaro from scratch; but that’s very down the line, at least until KDE Plasma stops supporting X11 sessions (which they stated they will), or try another DE, like Cosmos. :person_shrugging:

After a bit more digging, I found a sorta-answer on StackExchange:

https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/685764/how-to-screen-share-using-slack-and-wayland-in-manjaro-gnome

While none of the methods worked:

  • Meta+` only showed one single layer Discord so that doesn’t work;
  • Flatpak doesn’t work; as above;
  • Change display mode to X-11, which is what I did and I know it works; I just need to make it work on Wayland.

However at the end, at the last method, it mentioned that

echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE be displayed Wayland if you have this problem. Indeed, this display server often have issues.

I’m now convinced I must have messed up a setting somewhere and I can’t recall where exactly. So I think the way to fix it for good is to do a clean install. I might as well do it someday, since I also want to make the file organisation better.

As far as i know Discord doesn’t really work in Wayland only. Only works in Xwayland or X11. When i tried in Flatseal to remove the X11 part Discord just wouldn’t launch. There has recently been some developments towards getting Wayland to work with Electron and that should be working now, but it takes time to trickle into the apps.

What you said makes sense, however I vaguely remember Discord, or rather, Vesktop, works in CachyOS in Wayland / Plasma environment. But that’s a few weeks ago so I don’t know now.
