Dell Optiplex 990 random freezing

Hello -
I recently did a fresh install of Manjaro XFCE on a Optiplex 990 with a i7-2600 and 8 gb ram on a SSD. Since the install I’ve experienced random system freezing forcing me to power cycle the computer. It’s locked up while running firefox, chromium, and thunderbird on both 4.14.85-1 and 4.19.6-1 LTS kernels. I’m very new to manjaro and would appreciate any advise.

No freezing so far, thanks for your help.

…and then it froze again. I checked that 239.6-2 Systemd running.

I’m not great at troubleshooting any other tips?

Provide more details of your system and hopefully someone with more expertise will be able to help you.

Random freezing is usually because of hardware failure or limitations (disk space etc).
If your current session was not “frozen”, you may check the previous boot errors, Xorg and xsession-errors

journalctl -p3
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old
cat ~/.xsession-errors.old

For current session/boot , remove .old from the last 2 commands.

FYI, next time post the info in the formating brackets use the symbol in the reply box that looks like this </> and paste the info. Anyway, your temps don’t look like they would be causing the issue, the gpu might be a little on the high side take a look at the gpu and see if you have a ton of dust in the fan. At the age of the machine this might a good time to apply some new thermal paste on the gpu heat sink.

Do you know what kind of power supply you have? Stock OEM?
Also do you have lm_sensors installed? If not install it and do a sudo sensors-detect and then sudo sensors following that post the results of sudo sensors .

You can also install stress-ng and do a stress test to see where the temps climb. I am thinking this either a temperature under load issues, or possibly a voltage issue on your power supply. If it is the original OEM power supply at 5 years on a desktop this is a more probable cause.

Lastly it coul dbe the nouveau drivers, have you tried switching your graphics drivers?

I just bought the system, no HDD as a cheap upgrade to what I had. I plan to upgrade the power supply and graphics card after the holidays. I never considered new thermal paste, probably a good idea.

I was hopeful that your board had sensors that would provide voltage readings. Unfortunately that does not appear to be the case. Fresh thermal paste is always a good idea with a machine new to you. I would definitely try switching your drivers from free to non-free/proprietary and see if that helps. Also try doing a memtest on your RAM you could have a bad stick, but in my experience things like this are usually due to voltage issues. Voltage issues are usually a result of a power supply with an attitude (i.e. a problem), or your utility company providing somewhat dirty power (i.e. the voltage to your house varies too much). You can either test the power supply if you have a good multi-tester, replace it, or in the case of dirty power get a UPS with automatic voltage regulation.

I’m shopping a seasonic 620w psu right now. I need to make sure any ATX power supply will fit in the Dell MT case. I’ll switch the driver on my next day off, I’ll have some reading to do. New thermal paste is also on the way. I appreciate your advise.

I’ve never done a BIOS Update, but am willing to give it a shot. I’ve downloaded the .exe, looks like I need to throw it on a bootable usb. Will unetbootin do that?

I just used rufus and freeDOS to make a bootable USB, then copied over the executable. I’m at work now, will have to update later. Thanks again!

Freezing is ongoing, 3 times this morning trying to read email. I think I’m going to drop in a PSU from a old Precision T3400 I have laying around, to see if it makes an improvement.

So, the latest update is I replaced the thermal paste on the CPU. I’m very hopeful this was the issue, it was dry hard and crusty. Definitely needed replaced. I also ordered a new SeaSonic M12II 520 Bronze EVO Edition 520W. We’ll see how it goes from here.
