Unable to boot Manjaro XFCE or update-grub

Hi, sorry if I missed an article on this already but I tried a few things and seem out of ideas.
I installed Manjaro yesterday and from the start I wasn’t able to boot into it. It would be stuck on:

/dev/nvme0n1p2: recovering journal
/dev/nvme0n1p2: clean, x/x files, x/x blocks

The x is because I don’t recall the number for either but along the lines it was like this initially.
It was stuck on this the entire time so I used a Live USB to find what was wrong.

I think it’s my grub file as I require the kernel parameters pci=noats acpi_backlight=vendor for any distro to work (not sure why). So this was missing in the GRUB_COMMANDLINE_DEFAULT so I added it and tried to update grub but said:

[manjaro@manjaro ~]$ sudo update-grub
/usr/bin/grub-probe: error: failed to get canonical path of `overlay'.

I’ll just add in some outputs I’ve tried to find the issue.

I wasn’t familiar with changing an fstab file but I tried with nano and using command blkid. I edited the file once but keeps showing root-image instead again.

[manjaro@manjaro ~]$ sudo blkid /dev/nvme0n1p1
/dev/nvme0n1p1: LABEL_FATBOOT="NO_LABEL" LABEL="NO_LABEL" UUID="0D21-090E" BLOCK_SIZE="512" TYPE="vfat" PARTUUID="069bd785-7ea3-0749-be4b-d1da721d7d0a"

I also tried mounting /dev/nvme0n1p2 to /mnt then chrooting in to update-grub which also didn’t work.

[manjaro@manjaro ~]$ sudo mount /dev/nvme0n1p2 /mnt
[manjaro@manjaro ~]$ sudo chroot /mnt
[manjaro /]# sudo update-grub
/usr/bin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?).

Then tried to mount /dev /sys /proc:

[manjaro@manjaro mnt]$ sudo mount -t proc /proc proc/
[manjaro@manjaro mnt]$ sudo mount --rbind /sys sys/
[manjaro@manjaro mnt]$ sudo mount --rbind /dev dev/
[manjaro@manjaro mnt]$ sudo update-grub
/usr/bin/grub-probe: error: failed to get canonical path of `overlay'.

I’ve tried fsck to check the two partitions:

[manjaro@manjaro ~]$ sudo fsck.ext4 -ycf /dev/nvme0n1p2

I’ve tried also booting in grub:

set root=(hd0,gpt2)/boot
set prefix=(hd0,gpt2)/boot/grub
insmod normal
normal
linux (hd0,gpt2)/boot/vmlinuz(version) pci=noats acpi_backlight=vendor root=(hd0)
boot

This then gives me:

error: no suitable video mode found
Booting in blind mode

Sorry for large tedious read but wanted to get what I’ve looked at and tried out. Let me know where I could go from here. I have no quarries reinstalling it again if need be as it has nothing important but would like to learn how to fix it as well. Thanks.

Ok to start with…

You cannot write on the live sessions overlay:

You need to chroot before with this helper script:

manjaro-chroot -a

If you use BTRFS or LUKS, then you need extra steps.

Then you can do your work on the local system.

For example investigate why it didn’t boot at the journal:

journalctl --boot -1 --no-pager
1 Like

The nvme0n1p2 is ext4.

[manjaro@manjaro ~]$ manjaro-chroot -a /mnt
grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sda1. Check your device.map.

Sorry for large output.
When I update grub in the manjaro-chroot it seems like the grub-prober is looking for /dev/sda1 when it should be /dev/nvme0n1p1 I believe? (nvme0n1 is the drive, and p1 has the EFI on it, p2 has the filesystem).

And my etc/fstab:

[manjaro /]# sudo cat /etc/fstab
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.

# Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a device; this may
# be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices that works even if
# disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).

This looks like it matches the blkid of the partitions too:

[manjaro /]# sudo blkid /dev/nvme0n1p1
/dev/nvme0n1p1: LABEL_FATBOOT="NO_LABEL" LABEL="NO_LABEL" UUID="0D21-090E" BLOCK_SIZE="512" TYPE="vfat" PARTUUID="069bd785-7ea3-0749-be4b-d1da721d7d0a"

So the system reached graphical target and then nothing? Even then display manager started:

Then it must be a problem with xorg or the gpu driver.

Could it be because my kernel parameters are pci=noats and acpi_backlight=vendor?

Not there:

ls /var/log/Xorg*

What you can try also is the fallback kernel at the boot menu of grub. Press ESC at boot time to reach it.

[manjaro /]# ls /var/log/Xorg*
ls: cannot access '/var/log/Xorg*': No such file or directory

I’ll give the fallback kernel a go then. I’ll let you know how it goes.

When you say try the fallback kernel do you mean repeat the process of setting a boot, prefix, insmod etc and then linux on the fallback?

Why? update-grub was successful:

It takes me to the grub menu when I boot regardless if I press escape though?

No, grub is by default hidden and the boot process also. So ESC is needed.

Well I’m not sure what I’ve done but I go to grub regardless. If I go into BIOS and select manjaro as my boot, it takes me to grub.

GNU GRUB version 2.06~4~manjaro

Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions.
grub>

Why is grub on your efi partition?

Normally you would have the EFI Partition with a folder EFI and not grub. And grub is on the root filesystem… so now grub on the efi partition searches for a grub.cfg on the same partition.

It looks like this:

$ tree -d -l 1 /boot
/boot
├── efi <-- this is a mountpoint of the efi partition
│ └── EFI
│ ├── Manjaro
│ └── boot
├── grub
│ ├── fonts
│ ├── locale
│ ├── themes
│ │ └── starfield
│ └── x86_64-efi
└── memtest86+

So mount the efi partition, remove grub there and reinstall it correctly in a chroot.

Btw… did you install grub like this?

sudo grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --recheck --removable \
--bootloader-id=Recovery \
--efi-directory=/recovery/efi \
--boot-directory=/recovery/efi/boot
1 Like

Ah okay that makes more sense.

sudo grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --recheck --removable \
--bootloader-id=Recovery \
--efi-directory=/recovery/efi \
--boot-directory=/recovery/efi/boot

I did something like this when trying to fix it…obviously did the opposite :frowning:

So I removed the grub from /efi/EFI then

[manjaro /]# grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=manjaro --recheck

Restarted and has booted properly
