Crucial MX500 500GB SSD ata errors during system boot

I have the following messages in the Kernel log after installing the SSD today and doing a clean install with 17.1.7 KDE media. It is present with both kernel 4.14.30 and 4.15.13.

many thanks for that information. i’ll see if the fix works for my mx500 ssd too but it is a different model from the ground up to those crucial models mentioned so I’m not 100% sure it will. crucial have changed controller for this one to a Silicon Motion SM2258 and used 64-layer 3D NAND design. if not, I guess I’ll have to report it upstream. the older MX300 525GB I have is fine with the current libata.

EDIT - The plot thickens, it seems to have just started being detected properly without any changes I’m aware of. I haven’t applied any updates, one thing I reckon could have triggered the message those couple of times was altering power management settings via tlp configuration and grub command additions. The possibility of that is very remote though since I commented out all disk related settings, the exception being to force APM off. what I ended up with is shown above in Inxi but here below is the tlp-stat output incase it sheds any light:

I am still getting the message but not every boot just randomly, it wasn’t specific to altering settings as I thought it had been so I decided to check the data cable tonight. it seemed to be secure but I’ve re-seated it anyhow just incase. it’s a right-angled clipped variety. of course the SSD doesn’t have a clip hole to secure it with but the mainboard does the other end. the cable is fine though, no signs of damage. I’ll see how it behaves over the next week. If it still does this I’ll take this further upstream and with the manufacturer if instructed to by the kernel developers. they may need to update the firmware.

it doesn’t appear in mine because I commented it out but it is actually there, i did a clean install with 17.1.7 ISO and the only update released to stable since was for inxi

commenting it out forces max performance and prevents power management. the reason I left APM set to 255 is so that the system doesn’t try to spin down a drive that doesn’t need it.

also AHCI runtime power management set to on disables that rather counter intuitively according to the comments in tlp file.

I believe it may be NCQ related rather than tlp settings. I’ve re-enabled some of the settings as below. using the APM value keep still gives none/disabled so 255 was the right value for the drive:

This issue seems to be arch linux related as the Intel 540s suffers from the same error messages during boot.

Here and here the {unrecFIS} issue is also discussed.

Surprisingly only arch and it’s derivates seem to be affected.

The bug causes minimal boot delay but has no further drawbacks.

like I posted on the crucial forum, I had read those threads since when I searched for the error it is the first thing I found. Crucial and Intel are in a strategic SSD manufacturing partnership so you would have thought that if Intel managed to fix the issue (as they indicated in that thread) then any future products from both companies would not be affected by it. This MX500 is the latest model from Crucial and I purchased it in March 2018.

Those particular Intel and Arch forum threads date from 2016 and we are now in 2018 with much newer kernels and a heavily patched libata version. the changelog for the 4.15.4 kernel is indicative of the number of changes in just one point release alone.

I’m going to take this up officially with Crucial. While there’s no huge problem with performance (as far as I can tell) , it still needs resolving. the error message is an annoyance even if the link resets and the drive is detected properly the second time. The delay is milliseconds by the way even in my low end system so hardly an issue in that sense. I’m going to test this with a couple of other linux distributions too. I feel it can’t really be distribution specific as libata is maintained upstream by kernel devs but you could be right. Would Arch modify the libata component of the kernel? I’m not sure they would want that hassle and ownership of any bugs it results in.

The fact it was reported by an Arch user is only indicative of Arch and it’s derivatives having cutting edge kernels. As such any errors usually get fixed by the time the kernels filter down to more commonly used non-rolling distributions. Couple that with Intel 540s being markedly over-priced and it’s not surprising there are few linux users reporting the same issue.

I accept it’s part of the baggage that comes with using brand new hardware on a rolling distribution. I’m just of the view it can be fixed by Crucial since my other older MX300 drive doesn’t do this. To me it certainly comes across as a firmware issue with the new MX500.

Both MX500 and Intel 540s have a Silicon Motion SM2258 resp. SM2256 controller with each their own / modified firmware.

As the Intel 540s 480GB is recently sold at a loss for only 103,-€ here I bought one for my Laptop on the off chance.

Fortunately the {unrecFIS} error is totally gone with the latest firmware update.

As you said - it’s always a good idea not to use the newest hardware with linux - especially as some companies tend to sell their products like bananas which have to mature at the customers!

So this is a firmware issue which will be gone with one of the next firmware updates I assume.

hopefully crucial will apply the same. I’m struggling to make direct contact with them as their support portal is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard. there are two options, phone support or live chat and I’ve not been able to reach them on either yet during the stated operating hours.

I’ve had a response from Crucial, they want a sata bus trace. how do I achieve that? I’ve tried looking it up but found nothing I can make head nor tale of which actually gives the necessary commands to do so.

the drive is telling the host that the FIS is unrecognized apparently “as if the host is sending an incorrectly formatted FIS, or perhaps the host is using a different SATA version than the drive”.

what are the necessary commands? I thought the output as above from the journal was the trace they needed but apparently they need more verbose information.

I have a question about TRIM. Does Manjaro send NCQ TRIM commands to SSD drives?

I believe it doesn’t because there are no FIS error messages attributable to the fstrim timer task actually running on a Monday boot up, the ones I do get at random intervals also occur before the fstrim timer service actually comes online.

Anyway, I was sent this:

One thing I need to point out is that the MX500 does not support NCQ Trim. This means that Trim commands from the host are addressed in temporal order, and not re-ordered in any way. The fact that we do not support NCQ Trim may be an issue here.

NCQ Trim does provide some improvement in wear at the margins, but nothing that we’d be concerned about in the context of our 5-year warranty, and most users will not notice the difference under the desktop workloads that MX500 was designed for.

This is not the final word on this. We are still investigating this issue with the engineering team, but I wanted to put this in front of you, in case your system is trying to use NCQ Trim.

New firmware for the drive released on 19th June 2018 seems to solve the error state messages. I flashed the update via the bootable ISO method and haven’t had the messages since. I’ll give it until next Tuesday and if no more error’s I’ll mark this as the solution.

Firmware M3CR022 has been tested and qualified for immediate release in the Crucial factory, including 2.5-inch and M.2 models of the MX500 SSD. The update from M3CR010 to M3CR022 is an optional update for SSDs in the field, but is recommended if the MX500 is experiencing any of the following issues:

Improved ready time from DEVSLP low-power state.
Improved TRIM and Wear Leveling performance.
Improved SATA error handing.
Improved compatibility with some TCG Opal 2.0 third-party encryption utilities (this change does not affect MS BitLocker).

@micsim35, How did you create the bootable ISO? I tried to create a bootable usb of MX500_M3CR022_Update.iso with SUSE Studio Imagewriter 1.10 and get the following error:
“Sorry, I can’t write this ISO. You need to use another program to write it to a DVD.”
SUSE Studio Imagewriter has worked for all other bootable ISOs.

K3B and it failed with DVD+RW, the same brand I always use for larger ISO but then worked with an old CD-RW. So if you have one of those or a CD-R handy try that instead

EDIT - another thing to note, it will only boot in legacy BIOS mode. So if your system is set to UEFI only, you will need to alter that temporarily in the UEFI firmware settings. Should you be using a notebook, it may be necessary to set an Administrator password in the firmware to make that setting available. Either clear the password by setting a new empty one straight after or write down the password somewhere for future reference. A forgotten password for UEFI can be a major pain in the backside with some makes of notebook to reset and often requires a phone call to the manufacturer.

Thanks, @micsim35 your instructions worked faultlessly. The MX500 SSD is installed on an older desktop system with no UEFI. I used K3B to write the ISO onto an old “Office Depot” brand CD-RW.
