Crash with 4.8-rc6 + time shift

Hai all,

i installed the new added Kernel 4.8-rc6 and booted it.

Just started:

  • aMule
  • firefox
  • Telegram (Edit)
  • some Terminals
    • mounted 3 external drives
    • began to delete a dir on /mnt/Backup
    • began to copy a lot of dirs and files from internal HDD /pub/FREIGABE to external HDD /mnt/Sicherung

After some minutes the PC froze complete… even the light on the mouse was out but i could here the copying/deleting going on.
So i had to do a complete shutdown and rebooted Kernel 4.7.4.

In the Journal i got this:

$ journalctl --since=today | grep -i 'error'

I hope somebody knows whats going on on this machine… might be 3 problems at one time or what?

Any help appreciated, thanks in advance

.

P.S.: Posted it in Kernel cause it was the first problem i had on this kernel - and read about changes in the libata drivers: Kernel Log (german)

The 4.7.4 works as expected.

Since you are on testing branch, this Info needs to be in [Testing Update] 2016-09-17 where the right set of eyes can see it(e.g., @philm). Post there with a link to here.
You also need to post the CLI command
inxi -Fx
results.

I’m just saying …if you want answer or explanation.

linux48 is not a stable kernel. I’m currently building rc7 of that branch. So hopefully that will make it more stable …

Isn’t there a easy option to add this in the right form?
I have always to edit alot spaces and /n the get it all into the block…

Thanks for noticing this and the advice.
Isn’t there a easy option to add this in the right form?
Sorry, I thought you knew. Use three backquotes to wrap it at top and bottom( or use
…
). The “Preformatted Text” button is supposed to do same thing if you select all the text you want formatted{in its original format} and then click the button(on toolbar above the edit box).

Also, FYI, rather than pasting and wrapping for each query post, there is a ‘post your inxi here’ forum thread{*} where forum member can post it once and then just link to that post in each query post(s). Obviously that is better for systems that are not going to change anytime soon, ;).
My system is not one of those so I do not have the link to that thread. Just search for it in the 88 box. …

{*} Actually named Dump your inxi -Fxzc0 here and bookmark it. THE issue with that is that one needs to keep it updated so not sure that is a better solution.
{ IMO, THE BETTER solution is to be able to post the info in the biography with a local script that updates to it on some regular or by call/run action basis. At one time The Linux Counter Project could/would do that for all active systems registered. …not anymore; dunno what it is useful for now. }

Yeah I’m experiencing infrequent system freezes on 4.8-rc6 aswell (first time so far on this notebook).
All of them happened in Firefox while playing Youtube videos.

Could be related to p-state or ACPI changes, but I’m only speculating.

No VB here but also face occasional freezes, not a lot. Just sometimes.
So I uses back linux4.7 (sym-link). Did not uninstall 4.8, will test again if there’s any kernel revision in 4.8.
Catalyst appears more stable (and better quality) than ati, And works fine in 4.8 (or just lucky there’s no crashes when I used it).

Now tha Kernel 4.8 RC8 was running fine a crash and freeze seconds after login:

There is nothing in this log but maybe it is a problem with the external drives…

Recently in a laptop machine ( Toshiba R50 ) and testing the Kernel 4.8 release candidates
I crashed every time I tried to open FireFox.
So it is not Virtualbox related.

The symptoms were almost imediate, Xfce completly frozen , no keyboard, no mouse “movement” …
Only by forcing the power button I was able to exit the crash.
Happened in all the “rc x” releases …
I was unable to log …
Havent updated to the final release at this moment though as soon as I can I will report …

Tested and confirmed the “Instabilty” of the 4.8.0 kernel, both in the laptop as in a I7-3770 desktop.

When a lot of cpu is required this kernel simply locks out …
Somethimes I get kernel panics , in another occasion I only noticed a “frozen mouse” …

I am now updating to the latest 4.8.1 to see what happens …

Updated to the latest 4.8.1 kernel and stated that for a simple partition resize it freezes …

So at this time I will rollback to the 4.7.xx …
At this moment I am using the 4.4.24-1 (LTS ) kernel to write this …

So in High HDD and CPU tasks the 4.8.1 is Unstable …

How can I help the dev team ?
Which procedures should I activate to get some logs and help the team ?

I have no more problems with kernel 4.8.1 - but will wait till the backup on Monday has run without problems.

Still having problems with 4.8.1-1 kernel…
Still no logs nor records whatsoever…

Machine worked OK for 4 days straight …
Until a cpu intensive task appearead …

As far as I can see there might be a “race condition” that locks the system …
Nonetheless It seems that the background processes are still working namely the network stack and HDDs ( lights sitll blinking ) …

Any ideas ?

Leave 4.8 alone and hope for 4.9 (at beginning of December) as Long-Term Supported Kernel to fix this…

With kernel 4.8.4 the machine is up and running since 2 days, did a backup without freeze and i hope the bug ir ironed out…

Kernel 4.8.4 is now stable and workable without any locks during cpu intensive tasks.
