Crackling with high bass on Audigy FX using pipewire

Hello.

Recently I decided to give another try to linux so I can migrate from windows and installed a fresh version of plasma KDE.

Out of the box it detected my sound card and the quality is amazing, even better with easyeffects but I have one annoying problem that is the bass. I like some bass in my EQ settings but when I set high bass the sound start to sound like crap and with crackling like it is lower quality.

Tried everything I could like setting the sampling rate to 192k (the max supported by my card) and changed the quantum values to:
Minimum Quantum: 512
Maximum Quantum: 8192
Default Quantum: 2048

But it still did not resolved the bass problem and the crackling in some musics with a lot of instruments, music like the ones from the first album of Royal Blood. It sound like crap, but some other album musics like Untitled from Rammstein sounds a little better for some reason.

I also tried to mess with some settings in alsamixer but no sucess either.
I hope someone can help me because the audio problem was always a drawback for me to go back to Windows, but I do not want to do that this time and instead, try to resolve.

I had used Manjaro with a Creative Soundblaster X-Fi and since a few year’s with a Creative Soundblaster AE-5, never had a bass problem.

Balance your Output switches to around 80% was always the key to not overdrive the single soundchannel, otherwise it could lead to crackling in some situation.

For clear sound you maybe should buy yourself a amplifier to adjust more base.

You can also try to use a Equaliser for different tools, when Alsa don’t give the result, you can try a Equaliser in SMPlayer or VLC a.s.o

I always had a dedicated soundcard and was using Windows for above 25year’s… i switched 4 year’s ago to Manjaro/KDE and i never had complains about the sound quality :man_shrugging:

Over-boosting bass frequencies can cause distortion

I suggest disable or bypass all audio processing in Easyeffects to check if audio is working without additional processing

Easyeffects has 14 open issues related to crackling audio

I also tried to mess with some settings in alsamixer but no sucess either

Audigy Fx (SB1570) uses Realtek ALC898 chipset instead of Creative Lab’s Audigy 5/Rx audio processor - Sound Blaster Audigy Fx/5/Rx Comparison Chart
so there are no DSP effects in ALSA to boost bass ( X-Bass ) like other Creative Cards
