Copying from Manjaro to iPhone 11

I hope this is the right place. I’m running Manjaro on two computers “New” and “Old”, and I have a non-jailbroken iPhone 11.
My goal is to copy files from New to iPhone and back via USB charging cord.
Currently I can copy files from Old to iPhone and back with no issue. Note there are two options, “Documents on Rainfly” and “iPhone”. The second is the camera roll which I typically don’t use.

On plugging in the iPhone to New, the camera roll does not show up as an option in the sidebar. (Fixed by installing gvfs-gphoto2) I can browse the files on iPhone, but cannot open any, and when trying to copy any file from New to iPhone (in the same location as before), it hangs for 15 seconds then gives an error, and I’m unable to browse the phone’s folder after that unless I unplug and replug it.

I’ve searched and tried various fixes and installs and configurations that I haven’t kept track of. I’m not sure why my old Manjaro installation allows copying but my new one does not.

Here is the output of inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width on each machine:

Here’s what sudo dmesg | less says after an attempt to copy from New to iPhone.

I remember going over that page many times and trying many of the things from it, but no luck. Just about all the packages it mentions are already installed by default. The only new thing I see is gvfs-gphoto2 – after installing that just now, the camera roll now shows up and can be read and copied from.

gvfs-afc was already installed and looks like the package that enables what I’m looking for. I uninstalled and reinstalled it, restarted the machine, but the error persists whenever I try to copy to the phone.

Are you in the “usbmux” group? needed for communication to ios devices

Added myself, groups command now displays usbmux as one of the entries, but error still persists.

You’ll probably need to logout/login for the change to take affect.

Logged in and out, restarted, error remains.

Are there any other tests I can run or logs I can look at that might help diagnose this problem?

Are you willing to try a different approach?

I gave on up on iPhone / iPad transfers on Linux using a USB cable a while back, and now I do it seamlessly over my network via direct Samba shares or NAS shares. The built-in Files app for iOS works “good enough” for this, but the free File Explorer has much more flexibility, and the Pro version allows you to save multiple connections. (Otherwise, the free version works great.)

I had the same issues as you. File and folder transfers were inconsistent from PC to PC, and even from update to update.

I’ll check out that app and play with it, as well as look for a way to set up shares. Thanks!

Definitely! I’ll be glad to share tips and tricks for getting the most out of it. Just let me know.

@oldjaderust
Maybe Snapdrop can be of any use for you?
You can transfer files between different devices if they are in the same network via your browser.
Just do a search for Snapdrop and you will find it.
