Computer freezes sometimes, REISUB doesn't work

My computer freezes sometimes. I do not know the reason for it.

Background info

I have previously used Ubuntu 20.04 and I had the same type of problem. I then got my PC to a repair shop to have it checked. There were no hardware defects nor problems. They didn’t do any driver checks. Some time after that I installed Manjaro 22.1.2 and finally everything worked perfectly. A period after that I upgraded the system using sudo pacman -Syu and about 500+ upgrades were installed. My computer froze approx a few hours after post system upgrade and restart.

I had Timeshift for backups so there were no problems. However Manjaro is a rolling release so I can’t wait forever to upgrade it.

When a freeze happens I can’t use REISUB. I have confirmed that REISUB work. What I get from cat /etc/sysctl.d/99sysctl.conf is kernel.sysrq=1. My PC’s blinking lamp doesn’t blink when the system freezes. I can’t make the CAPS button’s lamp turn on if the system is frozen. If I had cmus to play music the sound would just stop. So unfortunately I need power the PC down by pressing the power button long enough for it to shut down.

I have tried to upgrade only files that clearly wasn’t system related ones (e.g. Firefox), it worked but it was only 11+ packages of 500+. I tried for a partial upgrade despite it being warned against. I excluded linux packages in IgnoreGroup and IgnonrePkg in /etc/pacman.conf. I used different combination of:

IgnorePkg   = linux linux-headers linux-api-headers manjaro-release
IgnoreGroup = linux manjaro-release

I switched linux and manjaro-release and edited them away sometimes to check if the option crashed against each other. It still crashed.

I rolled back and waited a few days to see if there was a faulty package or something that made my system unstable. I upgraded everything using sudo pacman -Syyu. It seemed to work and I made sure to keep everything up to date then a couple of days after that I got the same kind of system freeze.

Now when this crash happened today last reboot I had open Palemoon, a couple of folders, Gwenview and cmus in Terminal.

You have done a full sync? without the mentioned Ignores in pacman.conf?

If so - :+1: as a partial sync state - for various reasons - is unsupported

It is difficult to say why your system freezes - there is nothing in your logs which says problem.

One is tempted to suggest running memtest+ on the system - to rule out faulty memory.

A little swap is always preferable over no swap at all.

The reason for this is the systems ability to swap out pages not in use and use memory as cache for pages which are actively used.

Another reason is situations where you exhaust your system - and with no swap OOM killer kicks in with unpredicatable results.

Don’t take my word for it - just take a look at the search for Linux system - why swap is preferred over no swap - SearXNG at sx.nix.dk

Some notes - nothing severe - just observations

You appear to have VirtualBox installed - but your firmware’s kvm extensions is disabled - if your freezes occurs while running a VM - perhaps enabling kvm in firmware would be beneficial?

You nic is RTL81xx and your driver is r8169 - perhaps you could get 1000Mbps by using the r8168 driver from the repo.

Thank you for your reply.

I made sure I don’t have IgnorePkg uncommented. I used sudo cat /etc/pacman.conf to check.

#IgnorePkg = linux linux-headers linux-api-headers manjaro-release
#IgnorePkg = manjaro-release
#IgnoreGroup =

I made sure I had everything up to date.

sudo pacman -Syu  1 ✘

I looked up on swap as per your advice and it sounded good to create a swapfile. I decided to use 4GB swap to my 16GB RAM because generally I don’t use hibernation.

I used these commands.

sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile1 bs=1M count=4096 status=progress
sudo chown root:root /swapfile1
sudo chmod 600 /swapfile1
sudo mkswap /swapfile1
sudo swapon /swapfile1
sudo cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.back-preSWAP
sudo bash -c "echo /swapfile1 none swap defaults 0 0 >> /etc/fstab"

I controlled that it fitted nicely in my fstab file with sudo cat /etc/fstab
I created a comment to help me remember.

# Swapfile 1st 4G
/swapfile1 none swap defaults 0 0

Then I used free -h to check if I swap showed.

free -h  ✔
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 15Gi 1.1Gi 13Gi 35Mi 1.2Gi 14Gi
Swap: 4.0Gi 0B 4.0Gi

It did but it wasn’t used. I restarted the PC but it still wasn’t used. I tested different versions from the Internet if there was a difference.

ps -A | grep kswap  ✔

I will stress test swap if it wasn’t used because it didn’t need to or if I something wrong when I am not writing this.

I have not used virtual machines as of yet on Manjaro so that’s why it wasn’t on. I enabled SVM mode in my BIOS settings. About a hour later the system froze again. REISUB didn’t work. I’m hesitant to name it here since its a SVM problem and not necessary my original problems but, anyway, on my previous OS freezes happened as shortest between each freeze when I had enabled SVM mode in BIOS. It might look like its also so on Manjaro but Its hard to know which problem is which.

SVM mode in BIOS became disabled after the freeze.

Is it useful if I will enable SVM mode more often to see if I will get anything from journalctl and dmesg after the freeze? Is it any particular command I should try for if they might be related?

I got new journalctl again since its a new freeze. I had up Palemoon, Firefox, folders and a couple of terminal tabs.

What do you mean? Where did you mean when you say the repo?

If the firmware change settings on it’s own - it could be a hardware issue - which brings me back to

If your system is working as per the NIC kernel support - please ignore the comment - the background for my observation related to your network card - linux kernel has built-in support for r8169 - but some systems work better with the driver packaged in $KERNEL-r8168 - where $KERNEL refers to your current kernel as reported by

mhwd-kernel -li

Computer freezes sometimes, REISUB doesn’t work

I had experienced the similar problem a few months ago. It rarely happened.
After my investigation, my old mainboard was a bit defective.
I tried to replace it with a new mainboard. So far I have no problem.

I went to BIOS settings and checked just in case. It turns out the freeze didn’t turn SVM mode off. Please excuse me. I’m so used to how Ubuntu 20.04 used to behave that I am talking nonsense.

I will run a memtest+ tonight. I feel that it shouldn’t be that since I did get my PC’s hardware checked.

I don’t understand. I have working Internet.

mhwd-kernel -li  ✔
Currently running: 6.1.31-2-MANJARO (linux61)
The following kernels are installed in your system:
   * linux515
   * linux61

Even so - if this happened when you were using Ubuntu too - firmware - usually - does not change settings on it’s own - and it points even more to a hardware failure.

A thought just sroke - perhaps your issue roots in insufficent cooling of CPU - perhaps clogged radiator ribs or a worn out fan.

I have no idea - there is a firmware entry allowing you to reset the firmware to it’s default values.

It may be a power management related issue - I really have no idea.

I remember correctly:

  • Journal log showed no error, because any error message could not be written in my disk when my computer was frozen.
  • REISUB didn’t respond at all, but I am sure that my keyboard actually worked. Why?
  • I tried long-pressing the shutdown-button of PC manually. That didn’t work. Why?
  • I tried to press the reboot-button of PC, that worked, but it didn’t reboot. I had to reboot again, that worked, but no error in journal log.

That’s why I thought, my mainboard was faulty.

linux-aarhus, some of your explanations are hard to understand.

Controlled that swap was being used when I had up many idle browser tabs.

free -h  ✔  24s 
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 15Gi 5.5Gi 5.9Gi 538Mi 4.2Gi 9.2Gi
Swap: 4.0Gi 11Mi 4.0Gi

Glad that I didn’t mess it up!

I have decided to try to clean up my CPU fans if there is an overheating issue. However I don’t have the tools for that so it will be put it aside until I get them. Until then I will see if swap reduced the freezes or if it didn’t.

I will try to remember to check the temperature in BIOS if the sudden freeze happens.

Just in case there is a misunderstanding. In Ubuntu 20.04 the SVM mode in BIOS settings used to switch back to disabled after a freeze happened. Now with Manjaro it didn’t switch my SVM mode off. It remained enabled even after the freeze. I’m still somewhat in a disbelief of that so I will check that often.

Why would I want to reset BIOS firmware? I think I did flash it a couple of years ago, or at least I have a memory being extremely nervous when I was about to start doing it anyway.

I checked 'https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator' in the basic tab to get a rough estimate and I have about 150W extra over the recommended. However I don’t see how much I actually use with that tool.

My computer is 7 years old aka its 7 years since someone cleaned it. Do you think its possible that my components did get damaged because of excessive dust?

I did ignore this problem when I used Ubuntu 20.04 for about 1 year before this because I didn’t find a solution on my own. I changed HDD just in case persistent hard resets (1-2 times per day each day for a year) could do damage to a hard drive. It didn’t help to reinstall Ubuntu just in case someone wonders. Could this have done damage even to other components? Do I need to renew the thermal paste?

Cheers! I am quite happy that I am getting help.

The difference between your and my case seems to be that my PC can be shutdown by pressing the shutdown button manually for 5-10 seconds. It’s not a large difference but I’m hopeful its not that.

Unfortunate I can’t check the restart button since I don’t have one.

I tried memtest86 my PC. When I had changed the startup disk priority and restarted the PC I came to a black screen that said that it couldn’t find my hard drive. I found out later that there were some problems with doing memtest on a hard drive with Manjaro’s full system encryption.

However I did go to a PC shop to check stuff like that just about 1 month before this. When I asked about the if they checked HDD, GPU and RAM. They did. They presumably also checked the motherboard but I didn’t ask about it. I had Ubuntu 20.04 installed on it, but they said whatever my issues is it must be a software issue. There were no hardware issues. I will be checking with them again to see what tests they did and what components they checked. Maybe its a business secret which tests?

I got a new crash so I’ll be posting the same kinds of logs again. Unsure if I should make a new post or if its better etiquette to just continue with this one. It seems to crash more after I turned on SVM mode. I’ll be turning it off to see if its just bias speaking or not.

It is next to impossible to know what is causing your issues.

What I have understood so far - facts extracted from the thread

  • the issue is occurring randomly
  • it occurs more often under pressure
  • there is no logs because kernel locks completely
  • kernel hotkeys REISUB is locked
  • the issue is not related to Manjaro specifically
  • the issue is persistent across different Linux distributions
  • last OS was Ubuntu 20.04

While - evidently - it is a severe kernel panic when even kernel hotkeys lock up - so - my last idea is to test the latest stable kernel - linux63

sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux63

If that kernel locks up the same way - there is a couple of reasons why I think it is hardware

  • kernel panic - total and complete kernel lockup
  • lock up happens using different distributions
  • lock up happens no matter the kernel

Yes. It looks right those bullet points you have there.

linux63 (or Linux 6.3.5-2) is the latest stable despite that the one I’m using Linux 6.1.31-2 has a LTS tag a recommended tag? Strange. Still, I will try it.

I did

sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux63
sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux63  ✔

It froze again and when I booted up my PC I had the Linux 6.3.5-2 running. I’ll be back on how it goes on that front.

I began looking into temperature and computer sensors if there is a overheating problem due to dust buildup. I can’t determinate if there is a high temperature or if its just normal. Everyone on old topics about it seems to have their own opinion on the matter.

I checked how my temperature values with: sensors

Do the PC cool down fast when not in use? When a freeze has already happened once it goes through a second freeze sooner if it has already happened earlier same session.

It also freezes on linux63. Do you think it might be a motherboard issue like Zesko thought?

This topic seems to be answered as far as it can go. Do I pick your post as a solution because it’s you who has helped me all this time and it was you that made your reasoning clear on why you think this is a hardware issue?

Everyone, thanks for the help. Cheers!

It is impossible to deduct from a forum conversation - but I think it is a probability.

A mainboard is a complex construction with a lot of joint connections which is soldered. Even composite components like a CPU - I don’t know the inner joints of a CPU - but I imagine is a maze of connection points and software - hence the need for microcode (amd and intel) to mitigate flaws discovered after production has been released.

The following observation is highly speculative as it is - by nature - difficult to verify - so just stay with my thought.

If a soldered connection cracks it may still provide a connection when in cold state - but when in warm or hot state - due to thermodynamic laws - there is a subject expansion on heating and a subject crimp on cooling off. The phenoma is most evident with large constructions like a bridge.

Such crack will cause randon disconnection of the joint point thus causing inexplainable issues with the system.

Explaining how and why such incident happens is left to imagination - I can think of a lot - e.g. like how you get icecubes from the drawer by twisting the drawer carefully to make the cubes crack loose.
