Computer Crashes without Warning?

The computer crashes about once per day randomly, and for seemingly no reason. This behavious is somewhat correlated with idle (The hardware idle power current BIOS is set to conventional, and not “idle low” BTW), but not entirely and can and does sometimes crash right in the middle of doing something.

Running dmesg | grep “Hardware Error”:

How can I pin down the number of causes of this? It’s not kernel related as I have tried the the LTS one and it still happens on it.

Hint:

I suggest researching the messages provided in your dmesg log.

The message may be interpreted using the following logic - but I am guessing - I have no idea what I am commenting on.

on cpu 19 - a machine check returned 0 = false on bank 5 with address baa0000000090150
which cause an incident on processor 2:a20f10 at 11-09-2022 21:18:21 reference socket 0 (incase of more than one processor) - the rest is likely identifiers of some sort.

The reference to bank 5 could point to a specific memory address not containing the expected value which may indicate a failing memory stick.

I converted the timestamp to human readable universal timestamp

It’s a significant bug in Manjaro that it does not manage to alert us by email when it is preparing to crash. I’d certainly fill out the form and claim a refund or replacement. Still, I did enjoy your title.

However, in the event that the staff of Manjaro might not agree with this approach, we should turn to our ‘Search Engine’.

From Searxng I got this: mce: [Hardware Error]: CPU 0: Machine Check: 0 Bank 6: ee2000000040110 / Kernel & Hardware / Arch Linux Forums

I doubt if it’s a software issue, but I’d boot from USB and see how that goes. Make sure it IS a hardware issue - and then possibly start rebuilding the machine.

Can you post some hardware info?
The rest of the hardware (PSU,…).

I saw that it was a machine-check exception, I was more looking for confirmation before purchasing another processor lol.

Not that it was some side-software error or something.

That would be funny though.
Like there is going to be a scheduled crash today or something lol.

I knwo that it was a machine check exception and I researched it ahead of the post, but I was just verifying it before potentially getting another processor.

It happens occasionally, and kind of makes me wonder if the CPU is failing. It was one of the earliest production runs of the 5950x, so I wonder if it was of a poorer quality. :woman_shrugging:

Then why didn’t you say so to begin with?

Your post title infers that you expected there to be warning…or something.

If you had been more clear and concise in your topic title and first post, you would have received the same courtesy in the responses by others.

Can you run inxi -Fza as root ?

I’m curious if you get the same issue with anything else - stick another ISO on your Ventoy and boot that, see how it goes.

I guess I’ve been lucky - my i3-4130 lasted forever until my old PSU died, so now I’m on a Ryzen 5600G and expect (as it survived 3 months already) if it survives more than 6 months, it should survive until it’s obsolete.

I knew this random issue in the past, that would be related to AMD CPU and RAM

Try to enable DOCP or XMP in BIOS, it solved the issue for me. CPU and RAM should be in good balance.
