Completely borked my video drivers

Hello all,

I have a bit of a problem with video drivers on manjaro kde (latestes updates, kernel 5.12). I had a setup with two video cards, one Radeon RX580 and one Nvidia model (forgot the exact one). The main vga was nvidia, while the radeon one was isolated at startup and passthrough to a windows VM.

I had removed the Nvidia card because I had to give it away and I am now left with the radeon one and tried to switch to the radeon drivers, by removing all the nvidia ones and installing the radeon drivers. But for some reason all I get on screen is an image formed of very fine RGB lines and nothing else.

here is some system info (let me know if I should add more):

I have used the following command to install the nonfree drivers for radeon:

Not sure what other info I should add. Is there an easy-ish fix to this? or I have to reinstall?

Hello @luciandf

Remove the vesa driver:

sudo mhwd -r video-vesa

Why did you install it?

because i thought it might fix the problem. it doesn’t work without it either

As megavolt has suggested, the vesa drivers are fallbacks for much older hardware

note: The mhwd profile ‘video-vesa’ is a generic fallback driver which should not be used in the vast majority of cases.

Here: Configure Graphics Cards - Manjaro

Try removing that driver, and you should be golden. If in doubt consult the documentation

ok give me a few mins and I will try again but as I said, I have tried without them too and it didn’t work. i’ll post again the results.

Also I have been reading the docs!

The Issue could be also the so called “timing issue”, since you used nvidia as main before:

Just put amdgpu there.

OK i have removed the extra driver and modified the mkinicpio.conf but still no joy. However I have tracked down the issue with xorg.conf where I had these entries for some reason:

# nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings

I have tried startx from ssh and X started fine but with missing audio devices and in a default looking deskptop, not my old one with the icons and panels. So the question is, how do I regenerate the xorg.conf file?

I have tried X -configure and I got this:

And I don’t know what to make of it. Can anyone clarify this?

brainfart moment! changed the name of the xorg.conf file to xorg.conf.bkp and then restarted and bam! I got my deskptop back! wooohooo!

thank you all for your help!

@Marcoose777 @megavolt I think I spoke too soon. Now I get the desktop and everything is fine until it becomes idle. Then it doesn’t come back up and the lines from the beginning appear again and I have to restart. Also the fans go crazy when that happens.
I shall investigate further!
