Clunky graphics performance on a fresh install

Hi guys… I apologize beforehand because this is more a “1st world problem” than anything else, but at this point I am just more curious than annoyed.

I’ve using Manjaro for a long time now and never had this issue.
I received a new laptop recently so, I removed windows and installed Manjaro Plasma, as always. At his point, all pretty straight forward. But I start to notice some clunkiness when operating the windows (maximize, minimize, drag, move, etc). It’s like the animation stutter and struggle to run smoothly. I started live form a thumb drive and notice the same thing. Seems to be something Plasma related though because I also run a live image with xfce (that I use in older machines) and no problem whatsoever even with transparecy windows and all the whistles and bells.
The weird part is that my other laptop is practically the same, and Plasma works very well , even with dual monitor setup (1080, 2k).
I am going to leave info from both down below in case somebody can spot a relevant difference than may cause this.

As they have practically the same specs, both use the same graphic driver:

# no issues
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Alder Lake-UP3 GT2 [UHD Graphics] (rev 0c)
	DeviceName: Onboard - Video
	Subsystem: nCipher Security Device 2782

# with issues
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Alder Lake-UP3 GT2 [UHD Graphics] (rev 0c)
	DeviceName: Onboard IGD
	Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 8aa6
	Kernel driver in use: i915
	Kernel modules: i915, xe

Settings in KDE are the same, I checked.

The only difference I noticed, is the mhwd -li output in the laptop with issues I get this:

Installed PCI configs:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  NAME VERSION FREEDRIVER TYPE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
           video-linux 2024.05.06 true PCI

Warning: No installed USB configs!

Whereas in the other laptop I get nothing:

Warning: No installed PCI configs!
Warning: No installed USB configs!

I am at a loss here.
Any help or suggestion would be welcome!

Today noticed 3 packages on the not performing machine that I didn’t have in the performing machine:

xf86-video-amdgpu, xf86-video-intel, xf86-video-nouveau and xf86-video-ati

So I uninstall them and reboot with no changes.

Then, create this file:

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

Section “Device”
Identifier “Intel Graphics”
Driver “modesetting”
Option “DRI” “2”
Option “TearFree” “false”
Option “TripleBuffer” “false”
Option “SwapbuffersWait” “false”
EndSection

Even when the working laptop doesn’t have it, just to make sure is not using intel legacy driver, but so far no luck. I am still playing with options here.
In the arch wiki mention something like Option “DRI” “Iris” but when I try that I get a black screen. It also mention that “the Iris Mesa driver is needed” but I don’t know what package has this.

– Edit 2025-03-25
This weekend, I did some additional testing, and install Arch on the same machine just to see what happens. The same problem shows, so at this point I am inclined to think that the hardware implementation of HP is lacking and has some performance issues. Otherwise, I can’t explain why the HP laptop have this problem and not the other laptop that have identical specs, except for the manufacturer. My working laptop works just fine with no additional settings. I don’t even have an Xorg config file.
When I fiddle a little bit with the HP’s configuration and set this:

Option “AccelMethod” “uxa”

Makes the problem disappear but also vanish the “smoth window movement effect”. The windows just pop out.
All this in X11 since in Wayland works OK, pretty similar to X11 in the other one.

Today get some weird results but at least I think I am isolating the problem. I tested a live KDE 6.3.2 and the problem presents itself even in the working laptop (with 5.x works OK). But this is where it gets “weirder”: it only does it in the laptop screen. In the external monitor works flawlessly. I move the same terminal window to the right and everything is smooth. I move it back, and it start stuttering every time I minimize/maximize it. The external monitor is nothing special. A Dell U2711 working at 60hz, same than the laptop. I don’t know what it is, and I don’t know what “improvement” has my current system than when I boot it, it doesn’t lag, but a fresh or live system with kde 6.x, does.
I need help of someone that understand how this work a little better than me and tell me what could cause this.

I leave this open in case somebody thinks of something until I can do more testing.
Thanks in advance.

It’s probably a shot in the dark on my part but these differences could well be significant.

Working machine:

Machine with issues:

I’ll look in to it but hopefully someone who knows more about these things will be able to offer more advice.

Hi Bud!

Thanks for taking time to reply.
I am not specialist or anything like it but as I understand it, this

is there, because in my working laptop I have wayland and hyprland installed, so it list hyprland daemons as available even if they are not in use in the current session. Both sessions are on X11 and even before installing wayland on my working laptop, never had this issue before.
On the other hand, I don’t know either why inxi consider the extra output:

Since the other machine also has krunner running, and the verbosity I choose was the same.
Very weird indeed!

Thanks again for going through all that and for the feedback!
