Clementine issue that affects other apps

Hello! I’ve been using Clementine for ages and suddenly last weeks it started to have an strange behavior. It start working fine, but sometimes, specially when I minimize VirtualBox, but also with some other apps like Thunderbird or Firefox when I come back from them to Clementine window, music gets quiet and the other apps windows behave weird -they don’t respond, can’t be minimized or maximized…- until I kill Clementine. Then everything comes back to normal, I run Clementine again, sound is back, it works fine for a while, until the issue comes back. It’s something really recent, no more than a week, but it repeats every day and pretty often, which is very annoying. Any idea of what could be happening?
Thank you!!!

clementine is no longer being maintained, so try installing strawberry a maintained fork of clementine, and check with it if you have issues

What a pity, I didn’t know that, I’ll try Strawberry, thanks!!

Additionally to that, according to your info, you’re running pulseaudio and pipewire.
There are circumstances where you can have both running, but if that’s not the case for you, then I suggest choosing one and remove the other.

E.g. pamac install manjaro-pipewire

(Beware that it might remove too much, do keep an extra eye out for the deinstallation log and double check that it’s correct.)

Thanks, it seems that both are required, I use pulseaudio as main audio manager, but some other apps need pipewire so it won’t let me uninstall it… I never had conflicts before, so I hope using Strawberry will be enough. I’ll try for some days and hope everything will work fine as usual. Thank you!!

I’m trying Strawberry but it also happens, sometimes when I go back from another window to Strawberry window it jumps to the last song played instead of continue playing the one running and starts that song from the beginning. Really weird. Any idea why this could happen in both Clementine and Strawberry?

not really… i was hopefull that using maintained strawberry would solve it … you can try switching kernels and see if that helps… also launching strawberry from terminal, may give some hints with some logs, when the actual issue happens

thank you anyway! It started after some recent updates. I keep running kernel version 5.16, as VirtualBox asks me for headers in kernel version 5.17, as if it wasn’t updated for last kernel, something unusual too. Clementine was running fine in kernel version 5.16 until past week, so I don’t know… I’ll try launching it from terminal and see what happens… thank you again!!

so it started to happen after update… so you could try installing the 5.15 LTS and also its headers; install this package also: linux515-headers and try with it

But I updated to kernel 5.16 long time ago and it worked fine until now, it started to fail after I updated some other things, not the kernel… I tried launching it from terminal and when the issue appeared terminal went crazy and started to show this (it’s only a small part of it):

those are gstreamer logs, but i doesnt see any errors … so i really dont know… except give the kernel change a chance…

5.16 is outdated, you could either switch to the newest 5.17 or rather go back to the “stable” LTS 5.15.

pamac install linux515 linux515-headers

ok, I’ll give 5.15 a chance, as 5.17 doesn’t have the headers for VirtualBox, and I need it to work… I’ll tell you. Thanks!!

ok, I have a couple of problems: my 5G usb wifi device doesn´t work in kernel 5.15, as rtlx2bu driver is patched for 5.16 and 5.17 but not for 5.15, and VirtualBox is not running either, headers are missed -but all 5.15 headers are installed, maybe I’d have to go back to an old VB vesion…-. It means that I must stick in kernel 5.16 until VirtualBox runs in kernel 5.17 and keep living with that bug in Strawberry :sob: it’s a pity that kernels get outdated so fast!

thats unfortunate … but there are 517 headers so it should work… also just had a idea, you could create a new user and try strawberry running there and check if there are issue under the new user…

Yes indeed! I have 515 and 517 headers installed, tried reinstalling VirtualBox, but it’s working only with kernel 5.16 :man_shrugging: I’ll try what you say, but I’m afraid it won’t work. I’ll need just patience
Thank you, mate!

You need also the virtual box modules. I don’t know how you install virtual box but it should do it automatically.

pamac install virtualbox :person_shrugging:

I haven’t had any issues running the latest version of virtualbox with kernel 5.15 or 5.17 so i’m guessing you have something not installed right.

Thank you. I have everything needed installed, I’ve been using VirtualBox for ages, and I keep it updated, but after last update it only works with kernel 5.16. I went through many kernel updates during the last years, I never changed anything else and everything is supposed to be installed. It should work with all kernels, but it’s working only with 5.16 :man_shrugging: Maybe next VirtualBox update will be able to work with kernel 5.17 too…
Thank you anyway!

Maybe, but it’s strange, as I updated it same as usual, and I’ve been updating my Manjaro system the same way for some years, using many kernels, I haven’t done anything unusual, I even reinstalled VB just in case… But it says I must check /sbin/vboxconfig and there’s no such a file anywhere in my computer, so I can’t check it. I’d love to fix it, of course, but now idea why this is happening, and it never happened to me before kernel 5.16 :disappointed:
Just in case, I’ve installed 6.1.32-2 version.

5.16 is unsupported, in any case you have to switch sooner or later.
