Cinnamon won't let me select background wallpaper

Hi, I can’t seem to change the background wallpaper from the default in Cinnamon. In the Backgrounds tab it shows the Cinnamon folder but won’t let me select anything from it. It will happily cycle through the installed backgrounds when I select the slideshow option in Settings, but it just won’t let me select any permanent one.

Ah … the runaway resource hog when it is functioning properly.
