Chrome/Chromium Instability/Hangs

I'm using Manjaro 18.0.4 Gnome with the 5.2 kernel. I have a Threadripper 2950X with NVidia 1080Ti GPU. Chrome/Chromium has been very unstable the last few months. I get frequent browser hangs, particularly with pages like Twitter, Discord. Actions will hang for several seconds and other tabs will before unresponsive during that time. I'll have to refresh the page or close the browser for it to return to normal. I've tried both Chrome and Chromium as well as Chromium-VAAPI with various flags. Also tried with hardware acceleration off. Nothing works, not sure what's going on here. I even had a rebuild plan and did a fresh install and still have the issues.

An article from october 2018 quotes google developers. This somewhat confusing when when I check my Chromium on Manjaro.

If Google decides to ship Chrome with Linux GPU video acceleration enabled, this problem could be solved. But, as per Chrome engineers: “Our goal is to have a Stable and secure browser first, and a GPU-accelerated one second, when possible.”

In simple words, Google considers it a lot of work to maintain a GPU accelerated Chrome and finds it more challenging due to the “general lack of quality drivers.”

Chrome engineers have also listed the continuous flow of new hardware, distros, and drivers as the reasons behind this decision. To some Linux enthusiasts these reasons might make sense, to others they might not.

It's not really about hardware acceleration here. I've tried both making sure it's completely enabled and disabled. I actually had it off to begin with. As well as tried both hardware accelerated patch Chromium and without. They all do the same thing. It's only certain content, but when it happens it causes all the chrome processes to become unresponsive or other ones in general.

I suppose you have tried with e.g. Firefox or maybe Vivaldi?

Vivaldi is based on Chromium source - so if the issue can be reproduced using both Firefox and Vivaldi - then we clearly has a system issue which may or may not be related to Nvidia drivers.

It doesn't happen with Firefox. I have not tried Vivaldi. I'll try that. I have no issues anywhere else in the system and everything runs fine all the time.

It made a surpring change in performance for my system. (Intel GPU)

That might work, --ignore-gpu-blacklist were suggested by the chromium-vaapi maintainer too if you ever planned to enable hardware video acceleration using VA-API. I see chromium blacklisted most of NVIDIA cards

I suggest using extension that limits site request from twitter or discords like uMatrix or adblocker like uBlock Origin

Btw, I use ungoogled-chromium. It just werks and no issues at all on my machine. You can try that I guess

Check for BIOS updates. It may not be related, but Ryzen systems are still getting firmware improvements.

Check with the Nvidia 430.40 driver. The Nvidia driver regularly has issues with Chromium (as well as other things).

If you can, try a different kernel and elevator too (e.g. cfg, deadline).

So far no luck. No new BIOS updates. Kernel changes didn't help. I updated to NVidia 430.40 which was come down the pike that day. But I think this might have to do with gdm. I'm going to try other DEs and see if it's any different.

So I tried KDE. There's something about the GL library and the compositor that's causing an issue. If I open streaming sites, etc now I get sddm or plasma shell going to 100% (only on 1 core) as opposed to gdm. In particular YouTube TV is bad. Just going to the page and loading the previews causes a hang. I'll see the X11 sddm or plasma shell take up 1 core and the whole DE hangs or sometimes just chromium and once it continues the process goes back to normal. Of course it should be nothing to this hardware. Frustrating. Any ideas?
