Change video driver from intel to modesetting

I run Antergos Linux on several computers and Arch Linux on one computer and I am now giving Manjaro KDE a try. I wanted to replace the xf86-video-intel driver with the modesetting driver. I followed the approach I used on my other computers: I replaced the contents of /etc/X11/mhwd.d/intel.conf with

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Intel Graphics"
        Driver "modesetting"
EndSection

uninstalled the xf86-video-intel package and rebooted. Everything is working fine, but I realized that Manjaro includes a hardware detection tool.

Could you please let me know whether the above procedure is correct? Is there another way of changing the video driver in Manjaro (perhaps using the hardware detection tool)?

I am new to Manjaro and suggestions are welcome. Thank you in advance.

You can check what mhwd is registering with this:
mhwd -l -d

The correct uninstall with mhwd is
sudo mhwd -r pci video-intel

https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php/Configure_Graphics_Cards

@cscs Thank you!

I did it a different way…compiled intel driver from aur…it is a little more stable on my haswell notebook.

Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora and Gentoo have already dropped xf86-video-intel in favor of the modesetting driver. I’ve had bad experiences with the Intel driver. The modesetting driver has been rock solid for me.

at least for me the problem with the modesetting driver is…not all resolutions…i own an asus zenbook pro 4k display and for now i´m using 2048x1152…i have no option with the modesetting driver.

Actually, the Arch Forum posts have all recommended not only uninstalling the xf86-video-intel driver, but also eliminating a 20-intel.conf (intel.conf in Manjaro) entirely, saying doing one without the other does not work. That’s the latest, anyway…

Regards

Well … theres a bit of ‘maybe’ in that

‘pacman -R xf86-video-intel’ and also remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf if you have it. Then reboot …

… If it doesn’t work try …

… modify your Device section in your Xorg conf if you have one :

Section “Device”
#your device configuration
Driver "modesetting"
EndSection

And If I’m not wrong, the intel.conf they created will just be overwriting the existing Xorg.conf’s default Device section… Explicitly forcing modesetting instead of ‘intel’. The first idea was that modesetting would just pop into play, but more than one internetor has chimed in needing the Driver “modesetting” in Device.
(again, makes sense to make your own conf file with small tweaks, rather than edit parent file)

Hi jsbach. Are you experiment any diference in screen tearing…?

@elAle Yes. I do a lot screencasting and with the Intel driver I noticed quite a bit of screen tearing in the recorded videos, even when when I used Option “TearFree” “true”. I no longer have such problems with the modesetting driver.

After running sudo mhwd -r pci video-intel (as suggested) I created the file /etc/X11/mhwd.d/intel.conf:

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Intel Graphics"
        Driver "modesetting"
EndSection

and then rebooted. (Make sure xf86-video-intel was uninstalled.)

ok how is modesetting working with bumblebee?

@mac I’ve neved used it with bumblebee.

ok I´ll try once more…hope the resolution works now.

So does not play nice with bumblebee? :frowning: Seems it might just be Manjaro install scripts, others have had success with Arch using modesetting and bumblebee together. Could perhaps try keep the intel driver installed and adjust the xorg conf like shown earlier to use modesetting.

I did that on a newer laptop, uninstalled xf86-video-intel, moved /etc/X11/mhwd.d/intel.conf to ".bak, rebooted and it worked. Here are the specs:

Little Hint: You can simply uninstall/reinstall intel driver in Settings > Manjaro Settings > Hardware:

Just right-click video-intel and choose to install/uninstall. It will also take care of adding/removing the /etc/X11/mhwd.d/intel.conf file.

For me on Thinkpad laptop with external screen modesetting does not work though, due to tearing. I am using Intel driver with “TearFree” option.

Neither mhwd nor Manjaro Settings Manager can set up the modesetting driver to work instead of the intel driver yet. Maybe it is good this way, as there are no statistics on what ratio of currently running hardware will work with modesetting driver and what ratio requires the intel driver.

If uninstalling intel driver as described the system runs modesetting driver. So Manjaro Settings Manager does the job!? It is not different from the manual way.
