Hi @taylancan98, and welcome!

Seeing as this repository has been dropped almost, if not more than a year ago, you either have not updated in a long, long time, or you haven’t handled you .pacnew files. And judging by all the requests to replace packages with the *5 version, I’d say you haven’t updated in quite some time.

Please work through this:

If, for whatever reason you can’t, won’t or don’t want to keep a consistently updated system then Manjaro might not be a good fit for you. Because Manjaro needs to be updated constantly and regularly. Not doing so will result in a unsupported, partially updated state. And if you’re not up-to-date you won’t be able to install new software. Or upgrade existing software.

All that said, why did you select “no” for the replacements? Had you stayed up to date and followed the Stable Updates you’d have seen that KDE-related packages were renamed to *5 packages, which needs to be replaced.

I haven’t updated the system since July 2022, because this system was not powered on since then.
I don’t get which tens and hundreds announcement I should read for an simple task such as “updating the system”

If you don’t know a solution don’t spend you valuable time for a quest game.

Thank you very much for your effort.

Hello,
Yes the system was powered off since July 2022.

I tried with yes to all also,
This didn’t change anything about the result.

the main thing is i need to choice on of two options for dbus
Which is not handled right I think

BTW, I am quite a power user and was able to set this system up with an touchscreen, autorotate, pen and all of it working fine.
then the screen was broken so the system was off until I required something to hook up to an TV for multimedia use.
Then I ripped off the display for cosmetic reasons and tried to use this laptop.

If you think it’d be simple, than I don’t think Manjaro is for you.

As to which Announcements : Announcements - Manjaro Linux Forum
(Yes, ALL of 'em.)

Edit:

If you feel the need to specify this:

…I do not think that it is true.

Also “power users” don’t struggle with things like this.

You probably have to refresh your mirrors:

sudo pacman-mirrors --fasttrack=5

Followed by trying the update again:

pamac --force-update upgrade --no-aur

And if that’t successful:

pamac upgrade --aur

Note:

Very importantly, DO NOTE however, that even if the updates themselves are successful, chances are good that something will break.

Also note:

This will cause a heck of a lot of .pacnew files that should be handled. But even if you do, it doesn’t guarantee anything.

I think the easiest, quickest, safest and best is just to reinstall.

If it’s simple, why are you asking for help? Evidently rolling distro isn’t for you if you plan to update once per 2 years.

If you don’t want to read “tens and hundreds” of announcements then throw each error line in google and you’ll most likely find out what the solution is. If nothing else you can remove those packages and install them back after – if you need them at all.

I’d look/search using these search terms - I remember many people having asked about that and that the fix was quite easy.

Apparently it was this:

or this:

btw:

Without a special reason not to do it, I’d rather choose 1) (the default) over 2)

Unfortunately this also didn’t work.

I tried the update command by choosing 1 also, but this has no action, because everything is aborted.

At the end I had to delete these packages to get rid of the dependency errors at the end
I will see what will break in future and repair step by step.

I hoped for an “magic solution” some more experienced user might have without spending so much time manually going through

Instead I was more frustrated by some replies and got called a lair too.

Nevertheless you all do it for free and I appreciate it.

The solution was to uninstall everything error like and update
reinstall what was uninstalled

I know you’re referring to me that I raised my doubts, but that’s the way things are…

There is no such thing. Manjaro is a rolling-release that needs to be kept up-to-date and as such requires more effort than a point-release system. That’s the way things is.

There’s not. But most of errors were mentioned in stable announcements. It’s imperative you follow them and understand how your system works.

So while you might be frustrated for having to spend X amount of time for fixing this, you have to understand that there went Y amount of work into creating those announcements for this exact reason and it can be frustrating seeing questions about same error for 8 months.

For year and a half of updates, it might be easier and faster to reinstall.
Generally, for a backup machine sitting in the drawer for 2 years, a rolling release distri is the wrong choice and i hope you now see why. Just stick with Ubuntu lts for that computer.

I’m new here, but statements like this usually do not bode well in the Linux community, especially if you are asking for help. Don’t take it personally, it just doesn’t belong in a request for help, and doesn’t add to conversation at hand.

I’ve been using Linux for 20+ years and spent a lot of time on FreeBSD before that. I’ve done a bit of kernel development and built images from scratch for embedded & IoT devices. I would expect the exact same treatment if I made a similar statement.

The “magic solution” is to make reinstalling and restoring your data/configuration as easy as possible, and do it often so you know it works. Like many cloud or container deployments, you don’t upgrade them, you re-build and re-deploy.

I’m on the forum because I enjoy maintaining my system. Because, even with Manjaro, re-building and re-deploying worked so well that I got bored and stopped learning the internals. But I may be a bit of a sadist, I once decided to bootstrap a cross-toolchain.

If your system wants to change something, in most cases for most normal users it’s a good idea to press enter. In this case the update would take the big “Y”. Why did you answer “n” instead?
