Can't hear audio

I’m on a fresh install of Manjaro XFCE, and my audio isn’t working. Neither my speaker nor my headphone work when I plug them in, so I think the devices are working. When I plug them in, in Volume Control > Output Devices, Line Out appears, so it’s being detected, and when I have audio playing, the red audio visualizer thing moves.

Hi @Seldom, and welcome!

From what I can see, it looks like you have two sound output devices, or sound cards,

I do not know the terminal command, but is the correct one selected for outputting? From what I read in your description of the problem, it seems like it is playing (outputting) the sound on the incorrect device.

Just make sure the correct one is selected. (AFAIK HDMI is also sound and counts as a sound output device, so if you don’t use that, you should make sure that’s not selected.)

My monitor doesn’t have speakers, and that’s the only thing I have plugged into HDMI, so HDMI Audio doesn’t and shouldn’t work.

In my Volume Icon > Audio mixer… > Output Devices, whenever I plug in my speakers or headphones, the Line Out port changes between Line Out (plugged in) and Line Out (unplugged), so I’m pretty sure that’s the right port.

I understand perfectly. My monitors don’t have speakers, either.

Unfortunately, computers aren’t as smart as humans. (Or some humans anyway, we create them after all.) We have to tell them how to do things (programming) what and when to do things (IT support.)

I suspect @nikgnomic is on the right track to help from what I can see , and I don’t know the terminal command, but it looks like he does.

And from what I can see in the pacmd list-cards command output, my diagnosis of the problems cause is correct, I just don’t know the terminal commands to fix it. But as I mentioned, @nikgnomic is obviously on the right track.

Good luck! (And thanks @nikgnomic.)

@Mirdarthos might be correct
Pulseaudio is configured to use both audio devices HDMI and Built-In Analog

set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_01_00.1 output:hdmi-stereo
set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1b.0 output:analog-stereo

I suggest you change the Profile for HDMI output to ‘Off’

pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_01_00.1 off

then check PulseAudio only has sinks and sources for analog-stereo

I was looking online for solutions to this, and ended up removing some packages, but I don’t know which ones, so I reinstalled Manjaro. Just letting you know in case anything is different. I’m still having the same issue, though.

^^ I think this is looking good. The HDMI card is off.

It hasn’t fixed the audio though, even after a restart :frowning:

Hope this is useful!

These are the relevant ALSA controls for Onboard Audio
(you can also see and adjust these controls using alsamixer)

Your ‘Line Out’ level control for green jack socket is probably ‘Front’
that is unmuted and has level set to 100%

Simple mixer control 'Front',0

  Front Left: Playback 64 [100%] [0.00dB] [on]
  Front Right: Playback 64 [100%] [0.00dB] [on]

Audio from green rear jack socket should be working with PulseAudio

But the controls for front panel Headphone jack are muted and set to 0

Simple mixer control 'Headphone',0

  Front Left: Playback 0 [0%] [-64.00dB] [off]
  Front Right: Playback 0 [0%] [-64.00dB] [off]

I suggest you use this command to turn Headphones on

amixer -c0 sset 'Headphone',0 64 unmute

I also suggest you turn off the control for IEC958 (aka SPDIF) digital output
(that might be causing a problem for analog audio playback)

Simple mixer control 'IEC958 Default PCM',0

  Mono: Playback [on]

with this command

amixer -c0 sset 'IEC958 Default PCM',0 mute

and finally save the new settings so they are restored to same state when system boots

sudo alsactl store

Thanks for the reply.

I ran all three of those commands and tried the headphone jack, and it still isn’t working, even after restarting T_T.

I borrowed a friend’s speakers and those don’t work on my computer, but my speakers work on their computer.

Try clearing PulseAudio cookie and databases in user home folder

rm ~/.config/pulse/cookie ~/.config/pulse/*.tdb

and reboot to ensure PulseAudio reloads and recreates new files

check PulseAudio again with

pacmd dump | grep -v modules

you will probably need to turn off HDMI profile again

pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_01_00.1 off

I discovered that my monitor has an audio jack, so I plugged my speakers into that. When I ran

rm ~/.config/pulse/cookie ~/.config/pulse/*.tdb

which reset my audio config, the speakers started working over HDMI. Sorry, I probably should have known that :P. Thanks for your help, though! I’m very grateful that you all volunteer your time to help with our simple issues. Happy holidays!
