Since the 06-24 testing update and switching to linux63 6.3.9 I have a problem with my notebooks internal display

Since the 06-24 testing update and switching to linux63 6.3.9 I have a problem with my notebooks internal display. Its resolution is 3840x2160 but I usually run it with 1920x1080 and 100% scaling, because my secondary display also runs with 100% scaling and so I can prevent scaling issues. When running 3840x2160 on the internal display I use 200% scaling.

linux63 6.3.10 still has the issue, so I downgraded to 6.3.8 for now.

My system specs:

inxi -v7azy

commit edcfed8671ee57bb599184f2e12a1b3e11b32306
Author: Hersen Wu <hersenxs.wu@amd.com>
Date: Thu May 25 08:37:40 2023 -0400

drm/amd/display: edp do not add non-edid timings

    commit e749dd10e5f292061ad63d2b030194bf7d7d452c upstream.

[Why] most edp support only timings from edid. applying
non-edid timings, especially those timings out of edp
    bandwidth, may damage edp.

[How] do not add non-edid timings for edp.

After testing also with 6.1.36 and NixOS using 6.3 and also having the issue, I created a patch to revert the commit and recreated AMDGPU module. Everything is back to normal again.
I also created a bug ticket at kernel.org.

Did you report the issue to the author of the patch and the reviewers? You have their emails …

I thought about it but wasn’t sure if contacting the author directly is the way to go. From your experience it’s ok to do so?

Kernel development is still done via Emails. you may add a Cc: stable@vger.kernel.org to your email so others may look at it also.

It turned out that I posted the bug at the wrong place. There is already an issue at the correct place (https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd).

And what of those listed issues is yours?

None. As I wrote and linked, there was already one for the problem I have

Well you still didn’t point out which issue you have? If there is an existing issue you also have, simply link it.

I had the issue linked on the word “issue” in the same post with the general url. Or did you mean something different?

Lets see if the revision 3 will fix that: [pkg-upd] 6.4.1-3 (a088a4b6) · Commits · Packages / Core / linux64 · GitLab

It probably will as it’s the same I did locally. Thank you for adding it!

I have kernel 6.4.1-3 running now and everything seems fine.

I tried 6.4.1-5 and 6.4.2-1 and unfortunately the issue is back again. I can’t spot the error when I look at the commits.

maybe test also 6.4.1-4 from here: Releases · manjaro-kernels/linux64 · GitHub

Tested 6.4.1-4. It also has the issue.

Hmm, most likely the addition of HDR patches. Can you test the updated 6.3 kernel again? It should have your revert added also.

Both kernels, 6.3.12-1 and 6.4.2-2, don’t have the issue  So you are probably right.

Yep, something to do with the HDR patches. Lets wait till they get upstreamed properly.
