Can't choose LTS kernel on fresh reinstall + can't install nvidia-340xx

Good Evening All.

I did a complete wipe and fresh install of Manjaro off the current live iso and verified the checksum. The main problem is I’ve been trying for ages to get nvidia-340xx to install as nouveau is not always stable on my machine. I’ve tried to install it with LTS 5.4 as I’ve read that n…340x is no longer supported on the latest kernel.

After installing the kernel I reboot and am not given any option in grub to pick a kernel! It loads right up.

Also, when i try to install nvidia-340xx I get the message
error: target not found: linux58-nvidia-340xx

I was getting this with other installs (this is reinstall number 4!) no matter what kernel I am on, and now I can’t even select the old kernel.

I’ve run pacman-mirrors and pacman -Syyu. I ran update-grub and all looks clear.

I’m at my whit’s end, expert help is appreciated. Much thanks, even if you just read this.

    MHWD module-ids for nvidia 340.108

Check which driver has support for you GPU:

mhwd -l

Check what is installed:

mhwd -li

Try installing it with

sudo mhwd -i pci video-nvidia-340xx

You would also need linux57, so there is no support for linux58, means there is no patchset for this Kernel.

It is recommend to use Manjaro Architect, since the newest Desktop version (i mean the ISO) have only video-nvidia-450xx included, which doesn’t support older hardware.

Hi. Thanks for your response. I made some progress and solved both problems.

I figured out how to pick the kernel. Had to change a couple lines in my /etc/default/grub I had to change RUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden from hidden to menu AND I had to uncomment GRUB_TERMINAL_OUTPUT=console

So I am now running Kernel 5.4. I was still getting an error, because it was trying to install nvidia for both 5.4 and 5.8 even though I booted into 5.4.

The solution was to not just boot up in 5.4 but to uninstall 5.8. Seems obvious now.

Thanks!
