Cannot suspend system

Hi, everyone!
I installed Manjaro, because after reinstalling Ubuntu I couldn’t either change the brightness of the screen or suspend my laptop. On Manjaro there’s no problem with brightness, but still - when I try to suspend, my screen turns black but laptop keeps working and I cannot wake it up.

I also noticed, that my graphics card drivers doesn’t work as they supposed to. I’ve tried reinstalling them a few times, but sometimes after that desktop enviromen’t didn’t start and sometimes there was no effect at all.

Here is some info about my machine:

>>> uname -a
Linux manjaro 4.18.16-rt9-MANJARO #1 SMP PREEMPT RT Mon Oct 29 18:36:52 UTC 2018 x86_64 GNU/Linux
>>> sudo lshw -quiet -sanitize

I’d be grateful for any help.

Do you try LTS kernel? 4.19.29
or 4.19.25_rt16-2 if you need real time kernel?

also complete
$ inxi -Fxxxz
could helpful for helpers. :slight_smile:

I tried 4.19.29, but at startup, when it is supposed to show me gdm, it displays non-blinking prompt instead at black screen and nothing shows up. I also cannot switch to another tty. When I boot my current kernel, gdm shows after few seconds and I can properly log in.

And here you have your inxi -Fxxx output:

You have installed two DM’s … that might be as the result of following a video on youtube to install your video GPU? Remove GDM, reboot.

LightDM is just a leftover from my trials to change desktop enviroment. I failed and forgot to remove all packages, as you can see :wink:

All my issues (including 4.19.29 not starting up properly) existed before, at the very first moment when I installed Manjaro.

Now I removed LightDM and nothing’s changed.

???

In other words you made a mess of your system :slight_smile:
Now you try to log in XFCE using GDM ?

?

You said remove gdm, he did the opposite, so my ??? :wink:
In my i3 I use lightdm , gdm is empty, my english got better from day to day :smiley:

Ahhh, sorry, i’m too tired, i guess. I removed lightdm because that’s the one that I installed later. I didn’t paid attention to your response :frowning:

Should I now install lightdm and uninstall gdm?

:slight_smile: No worries … What DE are you logging into?

  • XFCE, i3, Cinnamon - use LightDM
  • KDE Plasma - use SDDM
  • Gnome - use GDM

At least this is how default works and i use it with no issues. When combining DE’s there are ways to make all work regardless the DM, but i always use a different user for each DE.

I use XFCE. I’ve just installed LightDM again, but now I’m far too tired to configure it to work. I’ll do it tomorrow and I’ll inform you about effects.

You were right! After installing back LightDM and removing GDM I can finally suspend my laptop!

Great thanks to both of you!

Now I need to find out why my graphics card driver aren’t loaded. But that’s topic for another thread :wink:
