Cannot select grub partition for booting in BIOS, but can access it from boot menu

My system is a dual boot setup with Windows 11 (only for gaming) on an Acer Predator Helios 16.
I had previous Predator models with Windows/Manjaro dual boot, where this worked ootb, but here I have a problem.
In the BIOS, I cannot choose the grub partition as the one to boot from. It is just not available in the list.
But when I press the boot menu hot key (F12) on startup, I can choose grub, then Manjaro and everything is fine.
Any ideas what I could try, or might that be an issue with that specific BIOS (upgraded to the latest available) and not a Manjaro/grub issue?

If I had to guess, I’d say you have one OS installed for UEFI compliant booting, and the other installed for MBR/Legacy.

Without more information that’s all we can do… guess.

Please provide more details about your system, and how you installed it (specifics), and also system information as described (below).

Additionally, provide the output of;

lsblk -f

so we can see how your disks are situated.

I’m sure someone will help further when they are able.

Regards.

Welcome to the Manjaro community

As a new or infrequent forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements, and the many ways to use the forum to your benefit:

Update Announcements

The Update Announcements contain important information and a Known Issues and Solutions section that should generally be checked before posting a request for support.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes more indepth information is usually needed;

It’s best to ask your system directly. :eyes:

Output of the inxi command with appropriate parameters will achieve this (naturally, formatted according to forum requirements) and will generally be more useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form:

inxi -zv8

Be prepared to provide more information and outputs from other commands whenever asked. It’s equally important to provide as much actionable information as possible in your first post, rather than simply indicating there is a problem.

Many thanks for fast reply. The output is below, does that help anyhow?

Thanks for that. Well, in this case my guess fortunately seems to be wrong. Let’s have a quick look at your $ESP/EFI directory to make sure everything is present and correct.

sudo ls /boot/efi/EFI
sudo ls /boot/efi/EFI/BOOT
sudo ls /boot/efi/EFI/manjaro

Thanks, here you are

[predator ~]# sudo ls /boot/efi/EFI
Boot Insyde Manjaro Microsoft OEM UpdateCapsule
[predator ~]# sudo ls /boot/efi/EFI/BOOT
bootx64.efi
[predator ~]# sudo ls /boot/efi/EFI/manjaro
grubx64.efi

If i understand correctly, you have 2 esps on one disk? This is a grey area and not per specification. It usually works but is firmware dependend. Besides, if your second esp is 1n1p2, it doesn’t seem to be recognized as such. In fact, it is not recognized as anything in lsblk. Is it fat formatted with esp and boot flags?

If i understood wrong and you has only one esp, maybe windows or a bios update wiped the entry. Reinstall grub as per wiki.

Not sure, please help me. Isn’t nvme1n1p1 nvme1n1p1 my only ESP? KDE Partition Manger says, that 1n1p2 is Windows Reserved.

Should I just reinstall grup and see if that fixes it?

That seems OK.

The logical next step is to set the Manjaro UEFI boot loader as default in your BIOS. If it’s missing, then as @teo suggests;

which should (in theory) add the UEFI entry again; then set that as the default.

Just confirming that you only have one $ESP according to the lsblk output earlier; as it should be: :eyes:

β”œβ”€nvme1n1p1 vfat FAT32 ESP 72F3-E0A4 195,7M 24% /boot/efi

So, yes, reinstall GRUB as indicated in the Wiki article (linked above). Let us know how you go.

Regards.

I have added a few links (following) which might be handy to bookmark in case they might ever be needed, but they are not directly related to this issue.

Check the manufacturer website and make sure it’s not a beta BIOS that you installed – the latest non-beta BIOS is always preferable.

Also double check that your BIOS settings are as needed for a UEFI booting system. Remember, with a new BIOS all those settings revert to the defaults. You would need to again disable Secure Boot, etc.

OK, I will reinstall grub tomorrow, just downloading a fresh installation iso, and update this thread. Thanks a lot so far

Make sure Fast startup is disabled in Windoof. This could cause trouble in a dual boot configuration.

That might be a hint:

But following the instructions to the end I get

[manjaro /]# install-grub

Rebooting now …

But still the same problem.

I cannot select to boot into grub

But from the boot menu I get the option

Any more ideas how to fix this?

Your second screenshot clearly shows that you can access grub β€” it’s the β€œmanjaro” entry in the boot menu.

What your first screenshot shows is that there is no entry β€” or at least, not a named one β€” for the second option in your UEFI’s boot order. @Wollie has asked you for the output of…

efibootmgr -v

… but you have not provided it. In addition to that, I would like to see the output of…

tree /boot/efi/EFI

I am guessing that your /boot/efi/EFI/boot directory is either empty, or has been commandeered by Microsoft Windows β€” it does do that, because Wintendo has historically always hated having to share your drive with any other operating systems.

Have you tried the empty second entry? Pretty sure it boots into Manjaro.

Yes, that ist the boot menu I mentioned. I cannot set it as a boot option in the BIOS (1st picture), but when I press F12 on startup to enter the boot menu, I can select Manjaro (2nd picture) and boot into grub.
My problem is, that I have to do this manually on every restart.

Sorry, I must have missed this:

Okay, I would now like you to try the following command from within Manjaro…

sudo grub-install --recheck --removable

After this, check your boot order settings again and report back.

OK, just ran the command, it ran without problems. But it did not seem to change anything. But see next answer …

It took me a moment to realize, what that means
Then I moved the empty entry to the top and rebooted. You are right, that was not no-entry, but just one with an empty name. Now my system boots right into Manjaro :grinning:
I don’t get the grub menu to choose my OS. But this is already so much better now because most of the time I use Manjaro, so thanks a lot.

Any chance that I could also get the grub menu back?
