Cannot login after switch to LightDM: "Oh no something went wrong" w. logout button

Hi

After switching to LightDM I can no longer login to Gnome. I get an “Oh no something went wrong” error with an icon and a logout button which takes me back to the login screen.

I can login to i3wm but not Gnome. I get several options to log in to:

  • Gnome
  • Gnome
  • Gnome Xorg
  • i3
  • i3 with debug

Everyone of the gnome ones seems to fail.

What I did was:

  • uninstall GDM and 3 GDM related packages
  • installed lightDM and the settings and greeter
  • added a startup script for my nvidia setup

My inxi output (in i3 where I’m typing this):

I tried several things but didn’t manage to find a solution. Since this is my work laptop I decided to revert my changes. I don’t think LightDM and Gnome are a good match on my system and there is not enough documentation that can be found to solve potential issues. Which is normal since most use cases exist out of Gnome + GDM.
