Cannot capture sound while everything seems fine

I’m dealing with some annoying problem where my microphone does not work while everything seems to be in order. This is a brand new hardware (rather cutting-edge) and I’m guessing the problem is at driver level but I’ll leave that up to you to conclude.

So here’s the thing, while my onboard sound card is detected and the audio output does work, the microphone refuses to capture any sound (absolute mute). Here are some pointers:

  1. The audio input is detected by the system and when I plug in the jack, its option is activated in the system settings.
  2. I checked the input volume and made sure it is not muted.
  3. The mic itself is tested on other hardware and I have verified that the problem is not the mic.
  4. My webcam has also an internal mic and when I select that one, I can capture audio. But when I manually select the “Microphone (USB Audio Analog Stereo)” it stops capturing any sound. Also, I don’t know why it is called “USB”!

What is the default sound server you want to run? Both running can create issues. Decide and make just one to run.

Also, i think you will need to install sof-firmware package.

Thanks for the info but I think I messed it up. I tried to uninstall PulseAudio per your suggestion. It was done successfully but then I didn’t have any sound at all. Then I thought I could reinstall PulseAudio and get rid of the PipeWire. So I reisntalled PulseAudio but I couldn’t uninstall PipeWire as so many crucial components depend on it (like Plasma!). So I ended up back in the first step, or so I thought.

Right now, even though I managed to reinstall PulseAudio, but I’m missing all my input/ouput channels. I cannot play any sound, let alone capture anything. I believe while I was uninstalling/reinstalling the PulseAudio, I must have lost my audio config. And now, for some reason, I can’t recover them. I tried removing ~/.config/pulse folder, hoping it will be recreated with my initial config files. While it was recreated after a reboot, but I’m still missing my audio.

Nevertheless, I looked into my laptop which is also running the same Manjaro KDE (maybe some older version of it, not sure). Even on my laptop, PulseAudio and PipeWire are running at the same time and I have no audio capture issue there. So I guess that cannot be the root of my problem.

In any case, I appreciate if someone can help me recover my PulseAudio config as well.

I managed to get back to square one by disabling the PipeWire. I used the instructions mentioned here:

systemctl --user disable --now pipewire.socket pipewire.service && systemctl --user mask pipewire.socket

Once I stopped/disabled the PipeWire, it only took a restart (or restart the pulseaudio service) to have all my input and output channels back. But still, the mic is not working (just like before). If anyone has any idea what might be blocking my mic from capturing any audio, I’ll appreciate it if you could share it with me. Thanks.
