Cannot Boot Manjaro From SSD

My problem is similar to that posted here, but as the OP seems to have given up, I’m hoping to have better luck.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X131e. Swapped out the HDD for a brand new SSD a couple days ago for better performance. Decided to do a fresh installation of Manjaro-i3. Installation went smoothly, but now Manjaro gets stuck somewhere in the boot process. (Black screen with a blinking cursor in the top, left-hand corner). I never see the GRUB menu, not even with a live USB plugged in. Nor is there any clear way to enter the BIOS. Maybe worthy of note that I did install about 10 programs after installation. I know it’s best practice to do that piecewise, but it was working before, so I figured what’s the harm.

I did have an issue when I first installed Manjaro (replacing a prior Windows installation) where it refused to boot and I was able to solve it by switching to an older kernel series. But if I can’t boot from a live USB, I can’t make any changes. UEFI is enabled.

EDIT: Okay, so I finally got into BIOS. The key was F12, not F2 as I was initially led to believe. The BIOS seems to treating the SSD as separate OS. I see the Manjaro installation in the menu and below that is the brand name of the SSD (Patriot Burst). If I select the latter, I just get the black screen. But if I select Manjaro it throws an error reading: “Failed to start light display manager” Gonna try booting from live.

Try enabling verbose boot to see if you catch any relevant errors.

In the GRUB boot options delete “verbose” and “splash”.

EDIT: I see that your laptop has an AMD GPU/APU, I’ve had a black screen booting on some AMD laptops with recent kernels. Maybe try an older release with and older kernel.

The boot sequence skips the GRUB menu. That’s part of the problem. Gonna try making a new live usb from an older version.

Okay, so I was finally able to log into a GUI with the “startx” command from the text console. Tried updating first thing and it appears that I have a conflicting files issue. As there are too many conflicting files to manually remove, I tried following the overwrite instructions here, but to no avail. I will post the output from command next. Any help in clarifying the problem would be appreciated.

Gonna have to. Tried booting in this morning and it threw me an error page, talking about the kernels panicking cause they couldn’t sync or something.

Here’s a screenshot of the current distro. Blue is the home directory. I’ve reinstalled several times and simply reappropriated the swap, root, and home partions. This time, I’m just gonna let the installer nuke the whole drive and start over from scratch.

Okay, so I went ahead and reinstalled. I let the installer wipe the whole disk this time and create the partitions itself. I was able to successfully reboot and update the system. There was an error warning regarding nvidia drivers at the end of the update, but the update did go through. I don’t use a Nvidia graphics card, so I don’t know if that will be a problem.

UPDATE: Next reboot the Display Manager would not activate. Had to login via “startx” by text console again. Everything else appears fine. I suspect this has something to do with the nvidia drivers, but I’m unsure how to deal with that.

So your original problem is fixed You successfully installed Manjaro, it boots and works. Correct?
Now, another problem is that after update from ISO to latest you have some incompatibility with presumed graphics drivers and lost X server because of that, system it in console mode only. Right?
Can you revert to latest working state (if it comes to that, reinstall) and we can work on what caused this.
Show inxi -Fazy as well, we can have look at your hardware.
Also give full journal logs and /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

First of all, install kernel 5.10, 5.9 is EOL. And check again is problem persists.

Problem still persists. Took an hour to install the new kernel, but that might be my hotel’s wifi connection.

I see. Try to downgrade or revert package you updated then.
You using older “radeon” graphics card driver. I use that driver in my laptop and its stable for weeks or months. Can’t help much here, perhaps someone more knowledgeable can step in and suggest something.

Well I must have done something right, because it’s working now. All I did was download the latest LTS kernel and the Manjaro Settings Manager GUI. Didn’t even have to switch over.

I don’t know if I mentioned it, but the grub menu has never shown up. Does it only show up when dual-booting or do you have to keystroke into it like the BIOS?

Great!

Grub menu is hidden by default and shows up only when you press enter Shift during boot. You can change it by putting “GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu” in /etc/default/grub. Execute sudo update-grub afterwards.
