Can not boot Manjaro

Since saturday, my manjaro linux suddenly can’t start (I installed it on sep’18).

I just have a blank screen but I still have access to tty. The graphic session don’t start.

I follow this FAQ but with no success:
Manjaro doesn't boot, boots to a black screen, or stops at a message

During boot sequence I can see a message about kernel module…

I will now boot on this system to give you more information (log files).

Thank you for your help !

But at least what kernel module is failing to load … Did you try to update the system from TTY?
The DE you are using could be relevant too, so we know what DM service we are looking for to start manually

Edit:
Also noticed that you are on

while the latest is 4.19.30 on stable branch. So, switch to TTY and do an update:
sudo pacman-mirrors -f5 && sudo pacman -Syyu
then reboot.

I’m not sure for the drivers I used.
I just can say I mainly used the intel chip and the Nvidia only with

optimus-manager --switch nvidia

I did the

sudo pacman-mirrors -f5 && sudo pacman -Syyu

Now I have :

System:
Host: accolon Kernel: 4.19.30-1-MANJARO x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc
v: 8.2.1 Console: tty 0 Distro: Manjaro Linux

But still not working…

How can I know the non starting module ?

That means you used optimus-manager that installs the video-nvidia, and now is not working as if falling back to nouveau. Redo the steps for optimus-manager to make sure is working, and with that you will fix it too.

I don’t know if that could be usefull but this is the output of

systemctl status systemd-modules-load.service

Please tell me you don’t have installed the virtualbox-guest-utils and/or some linuxXX-virtualbox-guest-modules on your machine
If you do, remove each and every one of them, and if you have virtualbox installed, keep only the virtualbox-guest-iso and linuxXX-virtualbox-host-modules
See HOST vs GUEST
and XX is the installed/running kernel/s

No, I had this two package and because I don’t use virtualbox anymore, I remove theim (sudo pacman -R ) :

  • virtualbox-guest-dkms
  • virtualbox-guest-iso

Now I don’t have any virtualbox package. But still no working.

what DE/DM are you using? kde/sddm?

I use the xfce version (with lightdm ?).

since your using optimus-manager, have you tried setting the default startup mode to nvidia and see if it will boot? i only ask because im helping someone else at the moment using optimus manager and cant get intel mode to boot.

get to a TTY and set nvidia as default startup and reboot

optimus-manager --set-startup nvidia

YES !!!

on the nvidia card, I can start a graphic session.

so its an optimus-manager/intel mode issue. i never could get optimus-manager working reliably. it’s the reason i made optimus-switch.

does the same thing, doesnt need bbswitch or nouveau for switching. bbswitch or nouveau on their own is a nightmare, together? :bomb:

if you want to continue using optimus manager, look into where it’s configurations are stored and post the intel mode configurations that get used for:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
/etc/modprobe.d/
/etc/modules-load.d

there will likely show whats causing the issue, unless it’s just good ol nouveau or bbswitch doin what it do best. kicking up :poop:

Of course I don’t want to keep optimus-manager. This optimus technology is a real pain for me. If I knew, I would never chose a computer with it …

Initially I used only the intel card and ran specific program with optirun. It was good but for a reason I don’t know, it was broken. So now I used optimus-manager instead but now it’s also broken :frowning:

So … “■■■■ Nvidia !!”.

optimus can be a pain in the arse, it certainly was for me until i figured out what worked and what didnt. after using prime, nothing compares for performance/stability but battery life takes a hit because both cards are always on. i really liked the idea of optimus-manager but each time i tried to make it work i always had issues. so i made optimus-switch that’s a PRIME setup when using nvidia mode, and intel-only mode disables/powers down the nvidia gpu so everything is run on the intel gpu only, and saving alot of battery life.

if you need a hand setting up prime or optimus-switch, let me know.
