Camera stopped working after update - no /dev/video0

I’m not sure if that is the result of an update, but since I wasn’t doing any system operations, I must assume this falls back on my testing update I did on 1st May.

Basically, I found out that system cannot see my laptop camera (previously no problems):

`v4l2-ctl --list-devices`
Cannot open device /dev/video0, exiting.

[video4linux2,v4l2 @ 0x740b10000c80] Cannot open video device /dev/video0: No such file or directory
/dev/video0: No such file or directory

Before I roll back my backup, I want to check if there is something I could do to fix it.

Basically, there is no video folder in /dev. So something broke here.

Any suggestions? Do you need more data?

maybe the inxi-info can still be helpful

Maybe I don’t know what to look for, but I can’t see any video/camera section.

Maybe some drivers broke and were unregistered?

Try other kernel?

I tried 6.13, 6.12 and 6.6 - the same issue.

I can’t see a webcam, (driver: uvcvideo), which is physically connected via USB. Loose contact? Low-Power issue?

have you tried it with a live system from a usb-stick? would be a stupid coincidence, but maybe it’s also a hardware problem

I checked on vanilla test user - the same issue.
Live Manjaro - the same issue.
Tudexo OS - the same issue.

This all points to some hardware failure :frowning: . Last week was all OK and this week I can’t use camera, because system treats it as if was non-existent.

Of course, when at first camera wasn’t detected, I checked my physical switch, but no matter in what position it is set, camera is no detected by any programs on any system. So either some connection got loose, maybe some chip got broken, or the blend system (physical switch got broken somehow) is not working. Either way, it points to hardware failure, which is the worst kind of problem :slightly_frowning_face: , because I can’t fix it easily, aside sending laptop to the producer for repairs or buying some external camera.

oh, that’s stupid.
have you done a bios update by any chance? or checked if there is one?
have you checked the bios settings, have you somehow set them to privacy? or is there a key combination to deactivate the webcam?

In the last week, I just browsed internet, worked and gamed, plus this update (I rolled back which didn’t fix the issue, so I updated again).

So aside the system update, I did nothing to change anything that would break the camera. But I do admit, sometimes the laptop was exposed to heat for some time, as I was working outside. Those are always dangerous conditions, but that is what laptops are for, and this one, is a gaming one, so should withstand more heat and has strong cooling system. Still, this doesn’t check heat on peripherals like screen and camera.

I haven’t done any BIOS update since a year or so. The fact that camera worked a week ago and is gone by itself, and that it doesn’t work on any kernels, any systems and even when the update is rolled back, strongly suggests hardware failure.

As to keys blocking camera, I don’t know any and most of FN keys don’t work on this laptop, although they should, since this is Linux dedicated model. I will check with the producer, Tuxedo, if possibly there is some key’s combination to switch camera off, but since there is a physical switch and a blend on a camera, suggests that additional keys are not needed.

I will check BIOS settings, because sometimes things reset by itself, but I don’t have high hopes. This is either hardware or BIOS failure. [EDIT]: In BIOS Webcam is enabled and didn’t find any other relevant settings.

Probably I will try to look for BIOS updates, as a last straw.
