Is there any way to stop having to supply a password when updating software? I am the only user on my laptop and it is only used at home.
Technically, there is, yes, but you’d have to start fiddling around with polkit, and to be honest, if you have to ask, then you shouldn’t.
The precaution is there for your own good, to stop you from accidentally messing up your system. After all, you don’t often have to update your system ─ twice a month at most.
