Black screen on boot after updates

Hi all,

I’m facing a similar issue to other posted on the forum, but I’ve tried various resolutions and they don’t seem to be working for me, so I’m wondering if I’m missing something obvious :frowning:

I’ve got a Lenovo X1 Carbon (no Nvidia, just integrated Intel GPU) on which I’ve run Manjaro just fine for about 2 years now.

However I ran a big set of updates about a week back, and since then I’ve been booting into a black screen. I can see the initial BIOS screen (I’m using UEFI, but I don’t know what else to call that first screen!), but after that everything just goes blank. I’ve tried waiting for a while, and tried switching over to other TTYs (Ctrl + Alt + F2/3/4 etc) but I don’t see anything happening. If I hit the Cap Lock key though I can see the light go on and off on it.

I then booted into a Live USB and a chroot and tried this troubleshooting guide, but it doesn’t work even after that.

Here’s some relevant info I found people asking for in other related threads:

[manjaro /]# mhwd -li

Please is anyone able to help?? I foolishly installed everything on a single partition so would prefer to not have to reinstall from scratch if possible, and hadn’t heard of Timeshift before this so hadn’t set it up :unamused:

Hmm, I don’t actually get any login screen, just a completely unresponsive black screen!

Nevertheless, the Intel driver angle looks interesting so I’ll give that a go and report back, thanks!

I would check blacklisting

  • /etc/modules-load.d
  • /etc/modprobe.d

For possible duplication - where it should come from I have no idea - to my knowledge there is no default blacklisting.

You can extract the pacman.log from /var/log/pacman.log - it provides the transaction history - but since it is Intel GPU

What generation?

Perhaps you can provide

inxi -Fazyc0 | curl -F 'file=@-' https://0x0.st

I have no idea what causes it - one could think kms - so please check if you have any .pacnew files

Well damn, after 4 days trying various things I think the Intel driver tip-off worked, and I’m now typing this reply from within my default install!! :tada: thanks so much @linux-aarhus !

For completeness, I also disabled the consolefont hook in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf but I don’t see how that would’ve caused complete blackness, so it seems reasonable that the display driver fiddling fixed it!

Great :slight_smile:

And you are riight - it throws a warning message if you do not have a font set in vconsole.conf - but is otherwise harmless

e.g. my laptop using a danish locale

FONT=lat2-16
FONT_MAP=8859-1
